World’s Most Expensive Production Car is an Aston Martin
For a cool $7.8 million dollars, you get this incredibly rare vehicle and a DBS GT Zagato along with it as a package deal.
Back in the early 1960s, a little company by the name of Aston Martin had an idea. The popularity of GT racing during this time was so high, they needed to be a part of it. However, there was another little company called Ferrari that posed significant opposition. Aston Martin decided to do as the old saying says “if you can’t beat them, join then”. Well, kind of. They had a car named the DB4 GT, but it needed some motorsport-focused improvements to make it competitive. Thus, they found the Italian coachbuilder company, Zagato, to help them improve the car.
The result of this partnership was the DB4 GT Zagato, a substantially lighter and more focused vehicle built for racing. Did the Zagato model actually manage to topple Ferrari? Not at all. However, it was stunningly beautiful and incredibly rare. Originally, only approximately 20 of these models were produced. Later on, there were four more “sanction” cars built and then two more models in the 1990s.
Now, for the first time in decades, potential buyers will have buy one of the 19 “continuation” models. Thanks to Carfection on YouTube, we see what one of these freshly built Astons might be like.
Let’s start with the elephant in the room. These Continuation Zagato’s will cost 6 million British pounds. That’s approximately $7.8 million US dollars. That price point is beyond exclusivity. It is actually outrageous. However, we do believe there are 19 people in this world of 7 billion that will want to buy one. In this case, all power to them. Not to mention, if you buy this car, you get a brand new DBS GT Zagato with it. So technically, two cars come with this package. However, we are more interested in the older of the two.
Carfection host Henry Catchpole got to drive the rare DB4 at the legendary Silverstone Circuit and his reaction was to say, “I must be the luckiest journalist in the world”. Catchpole has had the opportunity to both drive this and the non-Zagato version. His comparison is that this one without a doubt is the more track-focused model, with the other having more of a GT-feel.
We honestly don’t think the technical specifications are worth mentioning, because this car is so unachievable it is best just to be admired from afar. It is without a doubt the world’s most expensive production vehicle. If we were to summarize the Zagato with one idea, it would be this. The bodywork is so thin (1.2 mm) that you can’t actually apply pressure to any part of it without bending the metal. It’s best if you don’t even touch it at all. Ladies and gentlemen, the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato.
