Purists, avert your eyes. This turbo Carrera will never, ever be the same.

What kind of person tear out the crazy-turbo heart of a 930 and replaces it with v8? That sounds like insanity but, maybe not. The motor in this car a GM LS7. The lump is a 7.0L all aluminum workhorse that makes about 500 hp. That’s a solid 150hp over the original 930. For someone who doesnt’ want to fight the laggy acceleration of these early Porsches, the broad powerband and easy power probably make the car a little bit less… Dangerous.

But of course, power isn’t everything, and that huge V8 must be like an anchor right? Well, no. The LS7 is all-aluminum and therefore quite light. In fact it weighs less than the turbo six it replaced. It also sounds better, though, that’s a more subjective quality. Sorry flat-six, but that burbling V8 is a mean sound even if it’s suprising in this case. It’s a situation where my eyes say one thing, but my ears are telling me a completely different story. Just one question:

Where is the radiator? The LS7 isn’t an air-cooled wonder like the turbo motor. That coolant needs to cool off somewhere, and that we can’t see where it goes. We all know what happens to hot engines when they’re left in the back of a car.
