The Vintage F1 Crash You Won’t Hear About
Seeing race cars crush during a race is somewhat normal, but seeing two vintage Formula One Ferraris crash during recreational hot laps isn’t. Specially in such a stupid manner.
This video posted to Instagram by, daz_jack, takes us to Miami’s Homestead racetrack this past weekend, where judging by the photos and videos uploaded by various attendees, there seemed to be a vintage race car festival of some sort. Then again, it could’ve been something as simple as a few track members going out in their privately-owned race cars.
Regardless of what event was taking place, plenty of ex-Formula One race cars were at hand, including some as recent as Michael Schumacher’s F2003 Ferrari, though the two machines that were involved in the jaw-dropping crash (not because of how spectacular it was, but how dumb and expensive) were a bit older.
The video shows the 1994 Ferrari of Jean Alesi and the 1995 Ferrari of Gerhard Berger make contact as both cars attempt to stretch their legs on the short straight, before heading into the infield via left-handed corner. It’s unknown if anything else other than driver error caused the accident, but all we can see on the video is the Ferrari on the inside attempt to move to the outside perhaps to prepare for the corner, but made contact with the other Ferrari. That was enough to spin one one of them into the wall, and cause damage to both race cars. Very, very, expensive damage.
They’re just hot laps, guys. Take it easy!
