Real or Steal? Vintage Ferrari GTO Sale Might be a Hoax
Recently a ultra-rare 1962 Ferrari GTO went up for sale on a German site owned by eBay. Nothing new. The asking price was $63.7million. You have my attention.
The rare Ferrari is well within the limits of what those cost, granted it’s about a $10 million increase, but with Ferrari prices shooting through the roof lately, search up how much Dinos have risen, it’s not within the realm of crackpot crazy prices. At least when you are considering vintage Ferraris, especially vintage Ferrari racecars.
The car has been on the market for a few weeks with no takers. But has caused a bit of a media storm. Likely you’ve all heard about the potential sale from other outlets. Now however, there is a twist. Ferrari Historian and collector Macel Massini, known in Ferrari circles as the Information King, says that it’s a fake.
Well he actually said it was a replica, and with Massini, you know he knows what he’s doing. Massini stated that he has tracked the provenance of all of the 29 GTO’s and this one is not one of them. For the seller, those are fighting words. But for the potential buyers, Massini’s word is key to unlocking vintage Ferraris.
What’s also interesting is the decision to sell the car online rather than the traditional auction house. A fact that Massini points to lending it more towards a scam than a real GTO.
Usually this doesn’t happen in the world of high priced vintage Ferrari’s, but due to the enormous increase in value as of late, I have a feeling we may see more and more of this happening. But hopefully Massini will be on the case and thwart the would be scammers.
