We’re Still Baffled By this Highway Patrol Officer Racing a Lamborghini

There should have been pretty blue and red lights, before, during, and after these ridiculous shenanigans.

“Lamborghini races Highway Patrol.” Given the number of outcomes to a headline like that, the one you see here is probably the least expected…mainly because the Florida trooper decides to race the Murcielago.

While it normally makes someone’s day to get out of a speeding ticket with just a warning, it had to be an incredible experience to race a Highway Patrol car without consequence. Luckily, the car following the Lamborghini caught the whole thing for Instagram, and it went viral quite quickly.

Obviously, the patrol office must have been either a gearhead, was buddies with the supercar drivers, or in general was having a very good day, because a Lamborghini is a fairly easy target to intercept. But instead of a citation, we get to see a little pull.

We like the idea of Highway Patrol giving a little leniency to drivers of these cars, who arguably, are typically paying more attention to the road than the folks in average cars who often are seen texting. Of course, we don’t condone any unsafe driving or violation of laws, which brings us to our next point…

The other side of this situation is that it’s the trooper’s duty to keep the highway safe, and partaking in a race doesn’t reflect that. Consequences for the race may soon come down on the trooper, with Thomas Pikul, Florida Highway Patrol’s Chief of Public Affairs stating: “The Florida Highway Patrol has opened an immediate investigation regarding the incident. The trooper in question will be held accountable upon any finding of misconduct.” Since it isn’t entirely clear what part of Florida the incident took place in, the investigation might take a while. In the end, we hope a lesson is learned on all sides: just drive safe.
