When Opposites Attract: Tesla Plaid v. Aventador SVJ Drag Race
Will the sweet-sounding naturally aspirated 780 HP Aventador be able to overcome 1,020 efficient electric horses available from the jump?
Few things make die-hard gearheads like us more triggered than boring Teslas destroying exotic supercars (Aventador, 458 Italia, you name it) in drag races. There is just something about that fact that makes the stomach turn and the teeth grit.
A hard pill to swallow, without a doubt. However, the dominant acceleration of electric motors is truly terrifying. They are just that good.
Hoonigan‘s This vs That series on YouTube had to put their resident benchmark, the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid, up against an exotic competitor, the 2019 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.
While the Aventador may be at a clear 240 HP disadvantage in the match, will its 1,228 pound weight advantage make up for the difference? Let’s find out in a set of 3 rounds.
Pre-race Predictions
Jonathan Parzivand, owner of the 2021 Plaid, has only owned the car for about a month. It seems he has been putting it to good use in his short ownership.
Damon Fryer, owner of the Aventador SVJ, also is the creator of the DailyDrivenExotics YouTube channel.
Both cars have some minimal performance modifications, but are for the most part stock. The Tesla had better tires, while the SVJ has an upgraded Gintani F1 Exhaust.
While this exhaust is simply intoxicating to hear scream down the runway, it does not guarantee victory (well, maybe just in a 90’s F1 fan’s head).
Another shortcoming of the Italian supercar is the single clutch transmission. While it allows for gear changes like “a kick to the head”, it is far from the fastest shifting unit.
While none of them wanted to admit it, the majority of the present Hoonigan team came to a consensus that the Tesla was most likely to win with a 5-2 majority predictive vote.
