Workshop 5001 Builds The Best Longhood Porsche 911 Money Can Buy
This 3.4-liter 1973 911 hot rod is the epitome of classic Porsche feel with modern Porsche speed.
When you have the opportunity to build the greatest early 911 humanly possible, how do you go about beating this creation from Workshop 5001? This car, their first major reconstruction project, retains the essence of vintage driving, but it’s crafted with loving precision from modern-yet-familar components. There are 300 horsepower at the beck and call of your right foot under the back deck, but you’d never know it to look at the car. Sure it looks special, but it doesn’t look the kind of special that meansĀ fast.
Workshop 5001 is a small nondescript shop in Los Angeles that are thriving on the current Porsche market craziness by building a reinvented early 911 that is equally great to drive as it is great to look at. Unlike many hot rodded 911s of this generation, Workshop 5001 has not fitted this car with giant ST or RSR flares, or oversized wheels and tires. This is a simple and understated build that keeps things real for a change. It’s a traditional hot rod in that it takes a big engine and puts it in the small car. It’s ready for pretty much anything you can throw at it.
“As much as you’d like to make the comparison, this isn’t a car fighting toe to toe with Singers.”
This isn’t a backdate, and while they do use nice materials, a bigger engine, and modern suspension components, it isn’t overwrought with gizmos and luxury. Simplistic in its execution, this Nardo Grey beauty would be just as at home on a track day or back country mountain road as it would on the concoursĀ field. It doesn’t take much to realize that over the course of this short video Jehro Bovingdon fell in love with the car’s quirks. We are certain that we would be smitten from the first twist of the key.
