Help!!! - Boost Loss Problem!!!

On a drive this weekend, my car sounded different and I could hear a hissing sound from the back of the car under WOT and it sounded like only 1-Turbo was working. The car seemed fine though with no CEL lights and the boost guage showed 1.0 bar like it normally does (Car has GIAC ECU).

About 30 minutes later, I hit the throttle and the boost guage would only go up to 0.4 bar with a noticeable loss in power. For the rest of the drive home (45 minutes), the power was down and cruising at 100mph would result in 0.3 bar of boost (where normally there is no boost at that speed). Max boost was still 0.4 bar.

As a result, I left my car in the garage all weekend and took it up to the dealer today. On my way to the dealer, I gave it some gas and noticed that the boost went up to 0.8 bar (much better than the 0.4 bar before but less than the usual level.)

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong? My initial thought would be that one of the Bailey DV's that's in there is somehow stuck partially open (but closed itself a little over the weekend thus leading to the boost reading going back up to 0.8 bar)

It might be your hoses. If you had an ugrade in power the chances your OE hoses might have small holes that have formed over a period of time.

You could build an intake boost pressure tester and, with a compressor, boost your intake to 20 PSI, spray a bunch of soapy water in your hose connections to see if you have a leak somewhere. All part available at Home Depot (almost). PM me if you want a picture I built (got the initial idea from BigBadBen). It works great. You'd be surprised how much leakage is going on at the various hose connections!

I'll give that a shot if the dealer comes up empty handed!

Thanks,

This definitely sounds like a loose hose. I had this happen on my 996TT way back. The power sucked but the sound was awesome!

The dealer said they found a loose intercooler hose and all is well now!

I didn't ask, but hopefully they tightened up the rest of the hoses as well so that the system is air tight!

Parts:

White plastic = pool plumbing (I think)
Metal "T" & Threaded Reducers to fit pressure gauge (pool I think)
Air valve from industrial parts supply company

White plastic plug = more pool plumbing.

Pull the hoses coming from your turbos. Put the plug in 1 side and the pressure tester on the other side. clamp booth very good. With your compressor, boost system to 25 PSI (if you have the silicone boost hoses - I believe they are good to 28 PSI - the OEM hoses will probably boost at this level). Have a spray bottle with a water and dish soap mixture. Spray over all connections, including you throttle body. Big leak you will be able to hear, small leaks you will be able to hear and see the bubbles forming and popping. Show below is the drivers side boost hose as it attaches to the Y-Pipe. I will be replacing the clamp here as it is leaking. I also elliminated a throttle body leak as well as a couple of "F" pipe leaks. Good luck!
