1970 911 Brake options...

Looking to upgrade the brakes on a 1970 911 with 16inch wheels. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Does it have 3.5 spacing on the front struts??? If not you will need a set of struts to upgrade your brakes. The most popular upgrade for early cars are "S" calipers.

Its a 3" strut. I heard that you can use the BMW 320i calipers as a direct swap. Is that a better option that using the S calipers?

From my understanding the 320i calipers are for a solid rotor while the 911t came with a vented rotor. Would the 320i calipers be then a direct swap? or would you need to covert to another rotor other than the stock 1970 911t vented rotor?

Thanks!

David

Thumbs up

I would go ahead and switch struts & go to "S" calipers. I know about using the BMW calipers on 914s, but never seen anyone do it to a 911. If it was me, I would do it right, staying with Porsche parts, after all, Porsches are known for their brakes. I can help you get the correct parts. Any pictures of your car??

*****please correct me if i'm wrong on any of this*****

OK here is the scenario and would be good info for others in the future with this "itch" to upgrade brakes. Just a side note, the BMW 320i calipers use a vented rotor which is the same as the 911t. The guys swapping the 320i caliper on a 914 ALSO need the rotor from the 320i b/c the 914-4 had a solid disk.

Since its a 911t and has a 3" strut my options are as follows:

1) Calipers from a BMW320i and use all existing hardware.
2) Swap to a 3 1/2 inch strut and go with the "S" caliper.
3) Swap to a 3 1/2 inch strut and use a mouting kit for boxster calipers. TRE motorsports in North Hollywood has this kit along with a great reputation if you've never heard about them.

I think the easiest and cost effective is the 320i caliper swap.

What do you think?

Talking

The BMW might be the cheapest, but early 911s are getting more valuable, going with either "S" or even "SC" calipers is your best bet, if you want to preserve the value. Do you really need the stopping power of the 986 kit that Dave sells?? Of course I switched to 930 brakes on some of my cars

Hmm... yah i dont think we'd need the stopping power of the 986 kit but I totally agree with staying w/ the porsche parts and assuring the value of a 100% porsche car. I'll see what we are going to do. My uncle owns a shop called Haus of Performance in OC and its for one of his customers. I just had to do a bit of research from him. He actually used to race with Dave back in the day. Its just random that I met Dave since I live next door to his shop and brought my uncles name up.

930 brakes... hmm... from a 1970 911t to a 19xx 930 brake setup what would be needed? How does it compare to the 320i calipers?

Thanks for the help,

David

David,

My 914-6 has around 300HP (according to the dyno) the engine for my Toad Hall build be be close to the same. 930 brakes would be over kill for a stock 911T, plus the calipers are pretty pricy$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I feel a set of Bilstiens & alloy "S" brakes would be the best for a reasonably stock early 911.
