1983 Porsche 911 SC Coupe
I want to add a fun manual transmission to my fleet ... Saw an older Porsche on the road and kinda fell in love with it ... My LP-640 is an E-gear and it gets boring.
Any insight on these cars? Does this one seem correct? Do they make Euro bumpers, lights, etc ... Will my wife be able to jam through the gears and is the clutch from the floor up? Is this the correct year to get for this car? How is reliability?
Thanks,
Dario

This year 911 has the 915 gear box which will take some getting use to. The clutch does depress down toward the floor as you mention. You can get euro style headlight (H-4's) as well as euro style tail light lenses.
Not knowing your budget I would recommend a 87-89 Carrera. They have a hydraulic clutch and the G50 gearbox.

Thanks for the INFO ... just got off the phone with my old Porsche mechanic and he told me the car is extremely difficult to drive ... He also mentioned the car will always leak oil unless the engine is completely re-sealed ... Finally mentioned I need to check that the transmission is in good working order and that the car shifts in proper form.
My budget is $20K and below.

The 87-89 3.2 Carreras are much better cars. (The SC's are 201 hp 3.0L with the 915 gearbox while still nice are kinda slow) All aircooled 911's (all the way trough the 993's) have the clutch that goes down to the floor. You should be able to get into a 964 (89 C4 trough 94) for under $20k. I think that you will have a harder time finding a G50 (87-89 3.2) car for under $20k. With that said, if you bump up your budget to $25k you will find some nice aircooled 911 and close to 993 pricing. A 993 would be a great car for your wife to drive.

These SCs and Carreras are easy to drive and very reliable. I have also never had a problem shifting the 915 transmissions, but high mileage cars do suffer from damaged syncros. You can find a really nice 84-88 carrera for under 20K.

I think you would be hard pressed to find a nice 87 - 89 Carrera for under $20K. The 84-86 Carrera's are less money, but still have the 915 transmission.

Thanks for the info guys!!!
1988 911
What's the consensus on this color? It looks like a clean car and I love the interior but the outside 50/50 ... Was this some sort of special edition or does the color have history with Porsche?

yes, what you mentioned is expected. 2nd to 3rd is always a careful shift. you can expect an occasional hang up with 5th down to 4th too. these SC's have to be driven and paid attention to. with care, the trans can last a long time. pistons and jackets can be replaced. I had 325k on it when I sold my SC. I see it every now and then still running loud and strong. good luck

My '83 has been great. I drive it every day, rain or shine. I rebuilt the engine and put in 100mm pistons and cylinders (bumps engine up to 3.3L). 915 gearbox does take some getting used to, and it isn't exactly a fast transmission. If your wife is going to be driving it, I'd look at an '87 to '89 Carrera 3.2. You should be able to snag one for around 20.
