Car seat for '87 Coupe? Conversion to shoulder belt?

I need to get a car seat into the back of a 1987 Carrera 3.2 Coupe, but the 87's only have a rear lap belt. Does anyone know of a carseat that will fit the small seat, and work with the lap belt?

Alternately, is anyone aware of a conversion possible from lap to shoulder belts for the rear seats? I would imagine it's doable, since the 88's have rear shoulder belts. Might be a tricky retro-fit, but doable. Any thoughts- thanks!

Not a problem!

Not a tricky retrofit at all as I did it on my '87 Coupé. Go to your local dealer and have them show you the computer monitor with the blowout of the '88 or '89 cars and order all the parts you see there that you don't have in yours - it's as simple as that. All the attachment points exist already on your car and all needed is a small cut on the rear shelf where the top of the seat belt would be fastened.

As far as car seats are concerned, any of the Porsche car seats available through Tequipment for the 996 and 997 series will work as I had them on my car at one point - all except the one for a rear facing infant seat which you could put in the front seat anyways. I hope this helps!

That is terrific news, thank you CiberGypsy!

I currently have the Porsche Tequipment Junior Latch seat in the back of my '05 997SC, so knowing I can modify the '87 3.2, it's a no brainer to xfer the seat back and forth as needed. Much appreciated!

You're very welcome! The main reason I didn't buy a GT3 or GT2 is because I have kids too and love driving my car so much that I didn't want to miss driving it whenever I am with them, which is very often. I know doing this on your car will open it up to many more times together with the little one(s). Good luck and let us know how it goes.

A friend of mine just came home with a 2011 GT3RS, which has no rear seats, however, under the reat carpet it does have the anchor for a car seat tether, and it CAN be fitted with rear belts, so a seat WILL work in the back. Check it out sometime.

Would there be any issues with insurance companies covering rear passengers secured by rear seat belts on any GT3, be it 996, 997.1 or 997.2 as the car doesn't come with them from the factory? Would it be safe? I think it would. My mechanic at the dealer told me they have some kind of charge that releases some kind of ball bearings to tension the belt in case of an impact and that it would be a problem to have that part of the system work as the wiring harness for the car wouldn't be present. If I could have everything work as per the factory on the other cars that do have rear seats, I would really contemplate this and maybe sell my Carrera S and get a GT3 - maybe not a 997.2 but a 997.1 as it would be more within my reach. Thanks for the info and I'll check this out eventually.

rear child seat

years ago, I had an issue with rear child seat in a '93 RS ... if the factory does not provide proper attachment points, it will not fly with the insurance adjusters...

What he said was that all of the factory attachment points are the same. The 87 and 88 are identical, but the 88 has the rear seat shoulder belts. Thus, I can retro-fit them as securely as they are in the 88, from the factory. I'll share pics and process when I am done.

I did it, and it was a relative breeze, looks totally OEM. I'll post pics soon.
