Is a 1974 911s desirable?
Ive always wanted an old 911 and recently saw a fixer upper for pretty cheap. Not knowing much about early 911's, I did some research and learned that the 74 isnt considered an early 911. I have some literature about the differences between 1965 thru 1973 but nothing about the later cars. Can anyone here fill me in or point me in the right direction? Thx

If its a Carrera it is. If its a regular 911, I would rather have any older 911 (than 74) you can find. They were heavyier than the previous models, and sported a de-tuned 2.7.

How do you know if its a carrera or not? Im assuming it isnt because is wasnt advertised as one. I thought the "s" was the thing to look for. Thx luis
Is their any really good books that go thru all the differences in 911's that you can recommend?

What are they asking for the car you are looking at?
The Carrera will have wider flares (like and SC or a 3.2 Carrera) and a ducktail (99% of the time). A lot of them say Carrera on the side of the car too.

He is asking 3500 but the car doesnt run and is kinda rough, needs interior, paint, little bit of body work. He claims that is rust free. Seemed like a pretty good price if I could get it running without too much hassle. I really doubt it is a carrera. Ill see if I can put some pics on here for you to see.

If you are doing a track car pick up an SC or Carrera, strip the thing, do torsion bars+sway bars, r compounds and you have a fast fun track car. The really old cars demand a pretty big premium now so I would not suggest buying one of those if you want a cheap toy.

I'm sure it gets said with some regularity - but, a good thing to do is go out and buy "The Used 911 Story," by Pete Zimmerman. He goes into excrutiating detail on each of the models...problems, best ones...etc.

Actually a 74 can be a good donor car to make a 73 RS or 74 RSR clone. It's a function of money and time that you want to commit to a project like this. I seriously considered buying a 74 with a ducktail and a 3.0 liter engine.
