Prices for an 90+ C2 964 are the same as an 88-89 G50 car.
While that is true, in the long run, the 88-89 G50 cars will be worth much more, look at the 72-73 cars today. The 964s are faster, better handling, but used many cheap plastics. My C4 was modded, close to 300PH and fast as greased moose poop, but the tail lights, bumpers just don't stay looking good.

Too bad you guys are far away from Pasadena, CA.

I would love to buy you lunch and learn more about older P cars.

I can only say that I have owned an 87 Carrera with the 3.2 for 21 years. The car is pretty bulletproof. I have over 208K miles on the car, with quite few mods, as mentioned above...chip, overbored throttle body, cams, stainless steel B&B headers and exhaust, double strength valve springs, etc. along with the G50 transmission that has never had a bolt out of it. But these cars need constant attention to keep them up to spec. A valve adjustment every 15K miles is a must as well as keeping your fluids fresh on a regular basis. I can't speak about an SC, but I know several people who own them and they seem to be very happy with them.

I went to look at that 89 911 in Pasadena, CA. I did not drive it just looked at it for about 10 minutes. The interior is so dated. I think an 89 Accord or Camry has better interior.

I know I should look beyond this but I am really having trouble with the interior.

Maybe I don't get it?!

LUIS95993,

I saw the car on autotrader for $18,000 and by the time I get there it says $22,000. Maybe the dealer did not update the current price on the car but just don't think that is right. In addition to the wrong price on the windshield, it also says "Serious inquries only, no test drive". And I was on my way to jury duty. So I just looked.

One of the best things about old Porsches is the classic Form follows Function interior. Very easy to see guages, simple & clean. If you want a bunch of crap & gizmos, but a Honda. I personaly love the classic, race inspired early 911 interiors.

Bruce Anderson always says, "Buy the newest Porsche you can afford." The reason for that is Porsche makes constant upgrades during the production life of any model. A car built in August may have updates over a car built in April, although they are often not the type of changes that make headline news.

Both the SCs and Carreras are relatively bullet proof, but I would look for a Carrera over an SC as long as the budget permits. Hit the 87-89 models for the newer transmission, as echoed in earlier posts, if you find the right car within your budget. Don't forget the PPI!

sorry to bring back this old thread.

If my budget is $20,000, what should I buy that will retain the most value in the future?

I like the 87-89 cars too, but my choice would be a C2 , 90,91 could be had around 20k but will more than likely have high mileage (as will the 87-89 cars). I like the look of it, you will like the interior better for sure, and get it out on the highway and let those 3.6L legs stretch out! Some of these cars will have had top end rebuilds by now. The C2 suspension is better than the earlier car too. For the $$ you can't beat it. First thing you do though, toss the design 90 wheels! The engine was not moved back to make room for the G50 in the 87-89 cars, they used a shorter box.

What he said ^. For $20k you can pick up a 964 C2, which is what I would go for.
