3.2 Performance Mods

Thinking about some upgrades on my 1986 3.2, what are your thoughts on (keeping in mind I live in CA):

1. Lowering to Euro ride height
2. Cat by-pass (understand this will not pass Smog)
3. Factory Short Shift upgrade
4. Chip (Steve Wong)?
5. Any other performance upgrades you would recommend?

Street car, some competition?
Shocks- perhaps the biggest bang for the buck. There are some new options coming out that are outstanding, but the normal bilstein route is pretty good too.
Tires, of course...
How do you feel about stripping weight from the car (lightweight interior, etc)?

Mostly street, some competition also. Not sure about stripping the interior, since the car will be mostly street....any weight reductions I can make without major interior mods? Tell me more about the new shock options....

I'll PM you with the shock option if you're interested- it's not out yet, and I'm not sure it's public info.

You can get your car below 2450 lbs while keeping it looking "nice", still with a steel body, if that's your goal and you give up some creature comforts like AC. It's real work, but it would give you the equivalent of another 30 hp, 15% more brake, tire and a 15% stiffer suspension in the process. Worth thinking about, but it may not be the direction you want to take. There is no one place that you'll find all the weight- things like swapping to euro bumper shocks (or pulling them), lightweight battery, RS interior carpet and racing bucket seats, door bars, etc...

Competition- Autocross, or? What do you want to spend this round, and how well do you know the car?

Have you considered equal length headers/heat exchangers, such as SSIs? They make a very nice improvement in driveabilty along with a nice HP bump.

I would definitely get SSI's, a M&K muffler 2in/2out and the steve wong chip. I have the Koni adjustable shocks in the front and rear...Love them. But once you open that can of worms of trying to get more HP the sky is the limit. In a couple of years you will be looking @ the 3.6 upgrade or putting a turbo in her. HP is addicting

mmm...3.6. I had a lowly 2.7 in my car before the 3.6. It dyno'd at 113rwhp, and the 3.6 dyno'd at 255hp on the same dyno. Talk about changing the car's character!

Progress

OK - adding Steve Wong chip and Cat by-pass. Also lowered the car, added Turbo tie rod ends and bump steer kit. Got a ball park quote on adding a Turbo - $10K....seems like a big number...this was through S-Car-Go in northern cal. Hate to due too much to the car since it is so clean, and only has 34K original miles. On the fence between selling it and buying a turbo, or driving it and enjoying for a few years.

Thoughts?

I added a turbo to my car for nearly half that amount. I sourced most of the parts individually.

My 87 has been modded strictly for street use....lowered (slightly below Euro @ 3-3/4" clear under the rear jack pads) with turbo tie rods and rally sport Bilstiens. I did a lot of work to the engine, but I needed a major rebuild at 100K, something you probably don't need at 34K. The one thing that really gave me a big HP boost was installing B&B tuned ss headers with two in two out single chamber muffler. I also installed an over bored intake manifold and installed a cone filter to aid intake air. I had a special chip burned for my set up but for a stock compression and valve setup a Wong chip sounds like a good value. The 3.2 is a good engine and can take a lot of minor changes to make it even better.
