Anyone who has owned a ZR-1 and a 928
I just started looking at purchasing a 5 speed 1987-1995 928 or a 1990-1995 ZR-1 and interested in feedback from those who have owned both or maybe at least driven both fairly extensively.
Pro and cons etc.
Thanks,

Thanks, that's the kind of info I was looking for. I'm leaning heavily towards the 928, but being a newbie I know I've got a lot to learn before I buy one.

I have owned several 944 and 911's. Currently I have a 03 996TT and a 94 ZR1 and love them both. I haven't driven the 928 but I can't imagine it wouldn't be a great car to own.
Do you want two seats or 4?

I don't log in here anymore due to a certain heavy handed moderator.
In the meantime, I decided to build a pro-touring car with a 427 LT-5.
It will have a back seat.

I've owned 7 928s - 1989 S4 Auto, 1989 S4 5-speed and 1989 928 GT, 1978 928, 1993 GTS 5-speed, 1995 GTS Auto and currently own a 1995 GTS 5-speed. I have not owned a Corvette of any vintage/model.
Your choices are severely limited simply by the number of 5-speed 928s b/c most 928s brought to North America were Automatics.
Here are a couple pages that will detail the differences by year:

In my opinion, the GTS is the epitome of 928 production with it's 5.4L V8, larger wheels/tires and brakes, flared rear fenders and aero mirror to mention a few of the changes from the S4/GT version that preceded the GTS. The GTS is also has the smallest production numbers with just 406 of them brought to all of North America from 1992 through final production in 1995. Of that 406 total GTS production there are 93 1993 928 GTS 5-speeds, 44 1994 928 GTSs and just 30 1995 928 GTSs.
documentation on quite a few of the GTSs here:

It should be noted that there are technically no 1992 Porsche 928 however, Porsche did build the 1993 928 GTS when the rest of the industry was selling 1992 models referenced as the "early" 1993 928 GTS.
As far as ownership experience, I have owned 928s continuously since 1992 and have not one thing negative to say about them. The 928 sometimes gets a bad rap for high maintenance costs but I can tell you from personal experience that is is just not the case. This car is no more expensive to maintain than any other sportscar! The can be a nightmare, again like any other sportscar that has a lot of deferred maintenance. I would recommend that if you buy one you find a mechanic who knows there way around the 928. Sometimes repairs get priced b/c you're paying the mechanic to learn about the 928 on your car..... Not a good situation!
Prices on low mileage 928 GTS 5-speed cars recently topped $100k. Recently a 94 5-speed sold for $92,500, a 95 5-speed with 6k miles sold for $109,500. Both prices were higher than the original MSRP. I sold my 95 GTS 2 years ago for more than the original MSRP only to buy it back last March.
Good luck with whatever you decide to pursue. I know what I would look for........

Chuck,
Great write up. I appreciate all the info.
Your GTS looks new and of course a 5 speed would be the way to go.
I'll check out those links.
Good time to be a seller obviously.

If you need any LT-5 related info, Corey Henderson is the only person I trust with my Lingenfelter 415.
