Porsche needs to put Op-Art back onto the options list.

One of the first 928s I looked at was '79 Manirva(sp) blue with black/op-Art. I love the clean lines of the early cars, its nice to see a pre S4 in this shape.

Some sort of offroader? That's a LOT of wheel gap. And the interior is seizure inducing. Other than that it's pretty cool.

The factory spec for ride height is 190mm at the suspension lower control arm mount, and at that height there is a pretty decent amount of room between the top of the tire and the fender. Remember that the early phone-dial wheels were 15" and 60-series tires too.

Most street 928's are eather sagged on their springs or lowered on purpose. A few of us 'purists' try to keep the car in the factory tolerance range (190 -20mms) so the handling and bump-steer geometry are close to OK. The rest suffer from nose/chin spoiler damage at driveways and dips in the road, broken front inner fender liners from the impacts. BTDT, learned my lesson! On later cars ('90+) the engine oil cooler hangs down there in the front too.

Most Porsche cars come from the factory sitting high enough to drive real roads without a lot of worry. If you have smooth roads all the time and don't mind the bump-steer issue and the related excess/uneven tire wear, a little lower is OK too. It's a matter of taste as much as it is survival in most street cars though. I enjoy driving the car to much to want to worry about impacts with cigarette butts on the street.

Also on the Pre S4 cars the position of the motor is low, if you lower the car you could risk expensive damage to the AC.btw, compare that to any car built almost 30 years ago and the 928 will look low!

The 928 is one of the sexiest P cars ever built. They were great cars but a PITA to work on. I also have never seen one with that huge of a gap in the wheel arches as that makes it looks so damn fugly IMHO.

Very true! The engine in the later cars sits no higher, and the risk of ripping the AC compressor out along with the mounting ears on the block is very real. The little chin spoiler on the S cars is another frequent victim of impacts with debris, a problem made worse when the car has sagged or after it is lowered. Many are missing the brake cooling ducts and various other pieces after encounters with junk on the highway, or more often with driveway aprons and parking lot stops.

Filling the wheelwells with a modern tire & wheel combo goes a long way towards improving the looks while maintaining a reasonable gground clearance.

-----

The subject car is owned by a 928 fanatic/enthusiast who found it in the northeast. It's been pretty well disassembled for cleaning and refurb of the aging bits underneath. The Pascha seats are not often found in such great condition. They were a kind of art-deco statement for a car that won the Car of the Year award in Zurich at introduction. This is so far the only sports car to earn that honor. I suspect that the psycho seat insert pattern is either a love or hate item, but it does make a bold statement about the confidence that Porsche had about the car and the design.

Not too many of these GTS' were 5speed. A friend has one in the same color combo but not a manual tranny. I've been after him for the longest time trying to buy it from him.
