911 turbo expert needed to answer question

I was offered a 1987 Slant nose. This 87 turbo has a 5 speed, I am sure that the G50 transmission was offered ONLY in 1989. Is that Correct?

The car comes with a certificate of authencity from Porsche and the transmission numbers on the car and the certificate match. Could the 5 speed been special ordered in 1987?

The owner of the car says he has documentation to prove that the tranny was factory installed.

I called Porsche Cars of North America but since I am not the owner they cant confirm anything.

Any suggestions? Thanks for any help!

89 would be the only year for the G50 transmission in the Turbos, otherwise 4 speed. I am in no way an expert on this cars.

There are a bunch of slantnose guys hanging out/asking questions on this thread over at Pelican...

Orlando, only 89 had 5 speed. Unless it is a RUF BTR car, which could be ordered with a 5 speed. My 85 has a 5 speed, but as stated, it was a Ruf car (not ruf vin). First gear is down to the left and a very short gear.

I can also confirm only 89 has the g50 5 speed....however like the other member mentioned if its a RUF car or a RUF conversion it can have a 5 speed.

The G50 transmission is only on the 1989. All others came with 4 speed from the factory.

My 87 has a g-50 5 speed conversion and I love it. Make sure you have a PPI done to make sure it was done right.....

I previously bought a 92 cab with a 930 conversion and 993 6 speed. It was phenomenal as turbo lag seemed to be kept at a minimal due to closer gear ratios. My current 87 930 just cant be kept at full boil since it drops too much off boost range. Does anyone know the work involved in putting the 993 6 speed on a 930? I wish I knew more about that car but I sold it since.

The G50 conversion unfortunately is not plug n play. It's longer then the original 4 speed and doesn't fit in the original space for the gear box.

Maybe the car is actually a 1989? Maybe it is a typo as the other posters are right, it was the 4 speed in all the 930's with the exception of 1989 which got the G50.

Alois (RUF) put himself "on the map" by developing a strong 5 speed gearbox for the
930 to replace that strong but ungainly 4 speed gearbox. (He did this in the mid 80's,
years before Porsche got on the stick in 89')

IT TRANSFORMED THE CAR by being able to keep it in the boost much easier!

Would PCNA issue a Certificate of Authenticity on a car that has the wrong transmission in it? I haven't seen that done before. The certificate is issued based upon the records of the build sheet from the factory and Porsche's records. Since that tranny only came in the 89....how would they accomodate the fact that the car is an 87? Seems inconsistent to me.
