My first Porsche, a 1987 930

And now I'm in the middle of an engine rebuild, because of a broken cylinder. But, now that its apart, I got to learn some interesting things about the engine. Like it has 964 cams, Carillo rods, ARP studs all around, ported and polished heads, carbon clutch, and lightweight flywheel. Here's a pic of the broken cylinder, which also damaged its piston. I'm having one hell of a problem, trying to find one Mahle 100mm cylinder and piston.

Going with a whole set. Mahle 98mm cylinders, which will change it to 3.4L instead of 3.5L, but they're drop in cylinders and 100mm cylinders just have too thin of a skirt. That's probably why it broke to begin with. I'm also bumping the compression to 7.5:1, and putting a RarlyL8 Zork tube

Any updates on the motor refurb? I've got a new interest in this because I'm looking at a 930 myself. Trying to learn as much as I can before deciding. Hope it's going well.

I to grew up in my father's 911's and just bought my first Porsche 3 weeks ago, a 2002 996 turbo. My dad is 73 and drives a 2010 911 GT3 and he is at the track with it any chance he gets. Nice ride you have, have fun and be safe..

Well, come to find out, the block was bored out. Which means I'm having to rethink P&C's. I'm going to now go with LN Engineering machine-in 100mm cylinders and JE pistons that are 7.5:1 compression. So it will be 3.5L again. I also picked up an AEM digital AFR gauge.

Yeah, I was confused myself. When I was told how much it would cost to rebuild, my wife panicked. I have to admit, I did too at first. So I put it on Auto Trader, but as you can tell from the price, I'm not really interested in selling it. I only got two phone calls, and those were from dealers. Now that the initial shock is over, I'll be taking down off Auto Trader in the next couple of days. Sorry about the confusion.
On a much better note. My car should be finally ready in the next week or so.
Also found out that the heads had been ported and polished, from 27mm stock, to 39mm.

Funny story, but my Dad had me in to the Porsche marque at a really young age. Like many of us, I had a promise to myself about a 911 by 30. My dad gave me props for succesfully fulfilling my goal... getting my '73 911E. He took it one step further and found himself an incredibly clean 930 as well. Now we can share the affinity. Good Times!

I got her back. And what a difference in off-boost response with upping to 7.5 compression. I'm still breaking her in, so no full throttle blasts up the whole RPM range yet. I absolutely love the awesome, uncorked, Porsche Turbo flat 6 sound coming out of the RarlyL8 Zork tube. That turbo whistle brings a smile every time. After a 1,000 miles, I have to take her back in for a valve adjustment, and she'll be good to go from there.

Great news. Restraint during the break in period will pay off with years and years of future thrills. I'm envious.
A little video with the sound of the new motor would be inspiring. [subtle hint ]
