1988 vs 1989 - 4 speed vs. 5 speed?
Hi All:
Been looking for a 1989 930, however find lots more 1988 for cheaper. I assume it the tranny (4 speed vs. the 5 speed G50).
Weekend driver only; no track. Am I going to really miss a G50? Or shoudl I spend the extra money and get a 1989? Any big interior changes from 1988 vs. 1989?

From what I've read the 4 speed can be worked on w/o worries of anything going flying across the garage like with the G50, but if you want shorter gears in the 4 speed for low end torque then an Andial 8:39 Ring & Pinion may be in order on down the line with the 1988 with the money you saved not going with the 1989...RC

Just get the best and cleanest 930 car you can find. I have driven both cars and the difference is not meaningful. The 4 speed is fine.
It is kind of like the Porsche 993 cars.......do I get Varioram or regular plenums.........makes really no difference. You will have a great time with any clean Porsche 930. I love my 930. .......Good Luck you can not loose buying a 930!

1987-930
I own 5-PCars and my 930 with the 4 speed is my most enjoyable car to drive on the back roads. It feels like you are more part of the car ,if you know what I mean.Kinda hard to describe the feeling.I just wish it had better stock A/C for the Texas summers. I think you will enjoy either one!

I had an 89 930 that I used as a daily driver. I sold it with 90,000 miles on it, some at the track and I drove it hard whenever I had the chance.
I think that the five speed made street driving more enjoyable. I never had any mechanical problems with either the engine, trans or rear in all that high mileage.
Great car, the best I ever had and I agree with a prior responder that it was without a doubt the car that I felt the most in tune with. It felt like an extension of myself. The only car that I have ever driven that comes close to it was a recent drive in an 08 GT3 RS.

yes I saw that, he's looking for 12k , I want something a little less
I would love to see how much the Ruf sell for, so that I know how much of a premium I can get when and if I sell my 930S

IMHO the Ruf if it's in good condition I'd say it's worth $10K all day long.
I just had my 4 speed 930 gear box rebuilt adding an Andial 8:39 ring and pinion and wouldn't take $10K for it
