Where to buy 964?
Hi folks-
I'm new here and I got the bug for a 964. Although it wont be for at least 8 months til i purchase one, I would like to start looking into the marketplace. However, i'm not sure where the best place to buy one is. Do i continue looking on craigslist, cars, autotrader? Or is there a home for all things porsche's for sale? Any input, guidance is appreciated.
thanks

I would look through the forums first such as 6speed, Pelican and Rennlist. I wouldn't buy a used 964 from a dealer personally (unless it's a Porsche dealer) because most of their cars are auction cars. Autotrader/Craigs are both good option as well, just have to make sure you stay away from the scam artists on CL selling crappy cars. I have a Porsche parts shop (and am a 964 owner also) and have lots of contact with great Porsche people, if you let me know a few months before you buy what you're looking for, I can keep an eye out for you and find a nice clean one. Good luck and I'm sure you will love the car!

.....rennlist forum is most extensive body of knowledge available.
pelican forums has a good porsche for sale forum.
i recommend you purchase privately from a "caring owner" (preferably rennlister or porsche club member).
once you have identified what you want (c2, c4, cab, coupe, turbo)...you might find (because good quality examples are often few) that you might have to travel a bit.....not an issue as a local rennlister will be able to assist with a p.p.i.
to track prices.....general market....use craigslook (national search of all craigslists...
http://www.craiglook.com/
autotrader also works.
here is a relatively complete list of links that may assist....
http://www.rallystuff.com/pcar_sources.html
don't rush and when you target the car you want - whether you buy from a dealer or not INSIST on a full p.p.i. from an independent pro shop (not necessarily a porsche dealer, but a solid local shop that knows air-coolers).
p.p.i. should include full leakdown test.
good luck, great cars.........

Mine is a 1990 with 78,000 - am the third owner and knew the second owner. Black with Tan interior. Give me a PM if you are interested can send photos. Would not buy a 964 that has not gone through an engine rebuild - most leak like crazy. Mine was done last summer - also had the front clip painted to spruce her up a bit.

Thanks, I appreciate that!

However, I would not hesitate to buy from an air-cooled specialized dealer that holds free and clear title on their cars. If they actually hold title, they've spent their own $ on the car. If they are knowledgeable on these cars, they would also ensure that it is good, as they may have to sit on them for a while. Buying a 15+ year old car is always a crapshoot, even with a through PPI, leakdown compression test, etc. You're just trying to minimize your downside.
I also agree too to avoid auction cars…but you could find that out pretty easily.

With all due respect, I'd like to amend that point a bit. I agree with you in avoiding used dealer, but will also include Porsche franchise dealer as well. In many cases, the Porsche dealers are just as bad, if not worse.

Although an engine rebuild is a plus on these cars, I believe the 1991+ 964 engines came with the head gasket fix that stopped the leaking. Most of these cars do leak though, so a thorough PPI to check the engine and body integrity is definitely a must if you're buying it from a dealer or private party. My car has a slight leak, but still has excellent compression numbers and is a very quick car even by today's standards.
Personally, I would purchase my car from an enthusiast on Rennlist or any other active Porsche forum. These cars are expensive to fix, but many of the guys on there maintain their cars to the highest standard. Also, if you aren't already, I would increase your search to cover the entire US. Some forum members are nice enough to help you inspect the car if it's around their region.
