Evidence that the 991 is a still sports car: Nurburgring lap time of 7:40

This source claims that the 991s can lap the N'ring at 7:40!

http://www.carsguide.com.au/news-and...13_second_lead

Just another reason why to get the 991. This is supporting evidence that the 991 is still a sports car and not a grand tourer.

I got this from PKing Fast. Thanks

Never doubted that it was a sports car. It has more power and is lighter, while still offering a manual transmission.....that's all sports car material right there!

I remember reading that there is a 'track' set-up and it shaves another 10sec or so on Nurburgring. Regardless, with or without this setup, 7:40 is bloody quick!

Here are some lap times just to put things into perspective:

7:38 Ferrari 458 Italia (Horst von Saurma)
07:38.9 Lexus LFA
7:39 Porsche 911 Turbo*(2010)
7:39 Ferrari 430 Scuderia
7:40 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640
7:40 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
7:40 Porsche 911 GT3 997MkII
7:40 Mercedes SLS AMG
07:40.6 Ford GT
07:40.8 Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera
07:41.2 Porsche 911 Turbo S
07:41.5 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
7:42 Porsche 911 GT3
7:42 Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 SV
07:43.0 Chevrolet Corvette C6 Z06
7:44 Audi R8*V10

I think this is more strong evidence that the 991 is a sports car because it enters into super car realm (even if these super cars are outgoing models, it still is a huge feat for a regular carrera s).

@home I also heard that there is a special "track setup" for the 991 and it can lap the ring around 7:33. That is insane!

Agreed. Part of that reason is PDK of course, as well as PDCC, neither of which is available on a GT3. With the size of the brakes on a 991S I am curious how many laps it would take to cook them whereas the GT3 with its 15" fronts and larger rears (at the least) will still be fine. Lastly, as much as I do appreciate the Nurburing time, the 991 still pales by a good margin in any run to 60, 100 and on. When Porsche quoted the 997.2S time (7:50) the car had CUP tries, PCCBs and PDK. I am curious if that is the case with the 991S. Either way it is definitely very fast.

The 991S may very well be as fast as a .2 3 at the Ring. It also costs as much as well to equip it in a fashion to make it go that fast. A properly equipped gt3 had a MSRP of $118,000. It appears that a properly equipped 991S (with similar options, each sans Full Leather, plus PDK of course) with be above that amount. Unfortunately a 991S will never sound as good as a GT3.

With that said I can't imagine what the next GT3/RS will be.

If the 7:33 turns out to be true, this 911 is as fast as the Pagani Zonda F and Koenigsegg CCX. In other words - unreal

There is buzz about a specific "track configuration." A porsche engineer said that they were able to lap the ring 7:33 in a 991s. I forgot where the article is with the flood or new ones coming out everyday. But, obviously, it exists because multiple people have mentioned speeds faster than 7:40.

We'll see what the "track config" is. I am sure it is more than a 991S w/PDCC, PCCB, PDK, SC Plus w.DEM, CUPs, etc. In other words no where near a stock, or even very highly optioned, 991S.

I am assuming highly optioned or some other highly tweaked 991s. I don't know. That's what makes it so interesting. It is like this secret configuration that you can unlock.

+1 on that, it seems a bit hard to believe it beats a previous generation Turbo with PDK.

The 991 is going to be a great ride hopefully I can get my hands on one next year. I miss my 997.2...Here are current Ring Times? The ZR1 ran a 7.19 the Lexus ran a 7.14 and the Viper just ran a 7.12. These are current Ring times.
