Yeah, I know I'm the Guinea pig. A variety of factors have led me to making a new generation of 911, and one that I have not driven, become my first. Mostly, though, I really like many of the changes from the 997 including the interior and the odd sunroof.

I know the 911 has switched to electric from hydraulic assisted steering...the 991, however, also has the 'power steering' option for parking and low speed turns. As I have not parked 911's ever, and I did not notice difficulty in turning at low speeds, can someone tell me how it is when parking, for example, the 997? Is it a beast to turn the wheel, something my wife will complain about without end? I wonder if this option would affect the feel of the steering in stop+go urban driving.

Parallel parking is not an issue at all. Wheel turns easily. I am more worried about keeping my rims off the curb!

Yeah that's helpful, ty.

These add'l details regarding power steering plus option from my dealer were also helpful:
"The power steering plus option provides speed-sensitive steering assistance for additional comfort. At higher speeds, the steering is as tight as usual. At lower speeds, below 31 mph (50 km/h) it provides greater steering assistance, especially for very smooth reversing while parking."

I had in mind assist on <5mph or something like that. The power steering plus kicking in at 31mph and below may affect steering too much, so I will skip this option.

@YellowCalliper; sorry I cannot PM you back because I do not have 15 posts yet here on these forums. The best deal I could find in the SF Bay Area was "not a penny above invoice", so ya nobody seems to be interesting in considering a discount on the first 991's, not surprisingly.

I have a question to the Op...............

When you went into Porsche did they have more options and choices as to what is simply shown on the Porsche websites "configurator"?

I ask because it seems so basic. What about all the fun things like interior pieces and interior options?

I figured it was just lacking because it's still under developement.

Was there more offered at the dealership?

Thanks

No, the options are indeed pretty basic, especially in terms of interior aesthetics and trim. The ordering process involved a configurator that was either very similar or totally identical to the one on the website. After the configuration was completed, it was basically 'sent' to the orders system with one click.

Some things turn up as options at this point, such as 'porsche crest logo', which puzzled me as well as the dealer, but they could not be removed and were essentially standard features (with $0 cost) that showed up as options at this last step, for some reason.

Everyone says that the multitudes of customization options tend to emerge later in the lifecycle of new models...

Regarding voice control and lack of buttons on MF wheel vs sport wheel, the 991 (like the Cayenne and Panny) will have a stalk to the right of the steering wheel controlling the sub screen in the instrument cluster. You can control a significant amount of functions from this stalk and the screen. No need for buttons. I have had two of the new gen Cayennes, both with sport steering wheel, and have no issue whatsoever. Additionally, then screen and volume/controls/etc are literally inches from your driving position. Not hard to touch/reach if really needed.
