Colors, Sunroof, leather interior and other musings.

I test drove my first Porsche today and I think I'm in love, or perhaps lust I'm not sure. I have read the forums and dreamed for the past year but didn't want to test drive until I was ready to buy. Too tough on me and the dealer.

We started out with a 2009 Carrera 4S manual, sport plus seats, leather interior etc. Not what I would buy as I prefer rear wheel drive but oh what an experience. The sound, the sense of being connected or planted to the road, that and a lot more...it was great. The next test drive was a base 2009 Carrera C2. I was really surprised at the difference. The visceral experience of the S was definitely missing with the base Carrera. Not that it wasn't fast, it was but the growl and the difference in the amount of torque was noticeable. A very profitable test drive as I now know that a 991 S is the model for me.

Now my musings as I spend long hours in front of the Porsche Configurator. Color, I was sold on the Dark Blue Metallic but the sales guy I worked with believes that the actual Dark Blue Metallic will be a fair bit darker than what is portrayed on the Porsche website. I also really like the Platinum Silver Metallic as they had a 2012 GTS in the showroom with black rims that looked great. My last 2 cars have been silver but hey maybe I should just go with what I like. My question, do you think that the Dark Blue will be darker than the Porsche website and also do you think that the Silver is a more aggressive color especially with the black rims. Aggressive is good by the way.

Next subject is the sunroof. I have to admit that I am tempted by a cabriolet but I can't afford an S and a cab. It feels great sitting in a cab but I think I would be happier with a coupe, especially the S. The question is do you think the new sliding roof sunroof will be worth it? Will it give a reasonable sense of being outside rather than sealed in the car and lastly will the car suffer much loss of rigidity with this new sunroof?

Lastly I am thinking about the interior. With the silver exterior do I just go black or grey in the interior. Is the full leather interior worth the additional cost and if I went with leather do I go two tone black and grey or completely wild and go with the natural red? If I go with full leather I will have to forgo the sport exhaust due to my budget. Or I can go with the sport exhaust and leave out the full leather. Thoughts on the color choices and leather versus the sport exhaust would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone and sorry for the long list of questions.

No amount of sunroof can be a substitute for open motoring. Period. Sport exhaust can be retrofitted when your budget allows, full leather interior cannot. Nobody who has the full leather ever regret having spent the extra $$. Grey interior for some reason is not one of the popular interiors. Silver exterior and Carrera red interior is a classic Porsche combo but if you are one of those who worry about resale even before you buy one then you may want to think twice about red interior. I personally like the warmth on the brownish earthy hue of the platinum silver metallic. Choice of colors (both interior and exterior) is something so
personal that you should go with what your heart points to. Don't buy something this expensive just coz you got a good deal and then regret getting something which was not your first choice to begin with. Natural leather is worth the premium if you plan to keep your car for a long time. Good luck.

My thoughts:

1. Don't go by website colors, they are totally misleading. The frankfurt auto show had the dark blue metallic, look up those pics. Silver is classic can't go wrong it but you've had silvers b4 and might want a change. Dark blue is great as long as you don't worry about the issue of keeping dark colors clean.

2. The frankfurt vehicle also had grey interior with dark blue exterior. A safe and cool
choice.

3. Forget full leather, and get the pse. Full leather not necessary.

4. Remember to add on sport design steering and sport chrono and PDK.

Best of luck on your purchase.

^^ Totally disagree with the don't get full leather. Plenty will say you don't need it and it costs too much but these are mostly guys that don't have that option....big mistake and they know it....just can't bring themselves to own up to it. Let me tell you in a car like this the ownership experience over a 2, 3 and 4 year period is so much more special when the car has the leather. I recall getting a P without it and would never do that again. I couldn't count the times I've had to listen to the moans of other P owners that get into a car with the full leather and say "oh i wish i got the leather, its so much nicer". Every time my own bro gets into my car he complains about his big mistake of the partial leather....another sad example. Once the new car feel has disappeared (which doesn't take long) it comes down to tin tacks. Does the car reflect the dollars spent inside and out? Hmm...you'll know the answer when its too late...that you can be sure of. PSE can easily be substituted for a tubi or something like that. The roof is a nice feature and it's always nice to breathe the car out without having the windows down even if the roof is opened only on the rare occasion and if by only a few inches. These are the key options and, they count. Just look at the press cars. Are they trying to excite the general public into parting with their hard earned for a car that feels like a claustrophobic plastic bag inside? Everyone will tell you otherwise to get a deal happening....but things change afterward. The hardest part of anything is having to pay for it but once you're in it you will have 3 to 4 years to lament the things you should've got. Minimise the regrets and the lamenting. Bite the bulllit...you'll be so glad you did. Partial leather in a car like this is an absolute travesty.

BTW PDK is NOT necessary. I would agree the sports chrono is though. You'll have more fun with the cheaper manual over the long haul....no question.

Thank you all for your comments and advice. A couple of items that I am certain on. Transmission, I have a dual clutch now in a VW and have had manuals in a BMW and other cars. I love manual transmissions so that one is not an issue. I have looked at, sat and drove Porches with both full and partial leather and I really do like the full leather with the sports plus seats. I don't find them hard to get in or out of. The sport exhaust seems to me to be a bit more of a fun add on. I can add a sport exhaust later but not full leather.

The sunroof would give me fresh air more than just open windows. I really think I have to decide between the cab and coupe but given my budget I prefer an S coupe to a base cab.

Thanks catchmyshadow for the links to the dark blue vids. I still like the color but will have to choose between Dark Blue with the full leather two tone agate grey/pebble grey interior or the Platinum Silver with the natural leather espresso interior. If I was to get a cab I would consider the natural leather in red but not for a coupe.

I went with GT silver and Natural Espresso interior. Beautiful colour. I have thought about the switch to platinum from GT, as I can't see a lot of difference in pics. Will have to think.

Definitely get the full leather. I have it in my CTT, and have had it in previous BMW's. Porsche's take on full leather blows the competition out of the water.

Jason, I think the brownish hue on the PS would be an excellent match for the espresso. The GT silver has a bluish tone and not sure how good it would go with the espresso.

I like the Natural leather Espresso with the platinum silver as well.

How about with the Dark Blue Metallic? Espresso or the two tone black and grey full leather interior with trim painted in the exterior color, (picture attached)?

I don't think the trim painted in blue will work with the espresso. However, I think that interior would be beautiful with dark blue metallic. Check out the seat backs in leather. Didi mine with adaptive sport seats plus.

+1 on the full leather. It transforms the interior and is a must have option in my opinion.

Have you considered the Yachting Blue interior with either of the silver exterior colors? That's a nice contrast to either silver and a throwback to a very popular color combo in the seventies. And it's just enough different than a black interior to give it a little life. I am just about to order my 991 and I have come down to Dark Blue Metallic with Luxor Beige -or- Platinum Silver with Yachting Blue.

sfy1505, I am also getting closer to ordering and considering the same two exterior colors as you. I originally planned on the Dark Blue metallic with the Luxor Beige as well but now I am leaning toward either the Espresso natural leather or the two tone Agate Grey/Pebble Grey combination.

I still am considering Platinum Silver as well and would likely go with the Natural Red leather for the interior. A bit bolder I know. I just tried the Yachting Blue interior in the Platinum car and it does look nice.

As to wheels I would go with the Carrera classic for both colors but I am tempted to go with the Carrera S painted black for the silver car.

Decisions, decisions...

Considering the cost of the full-leather upgrade is roughly 5% of purchase price of the C2S, I would think omitting full-leather unthinkable for a car at this tier. If not painting the seatbacks in matching exterior color, I'd also consider the leather-backed upgrade. YMMV.

Have fun with your pursuit!

I have a dark/midnight blue tt. Its a GREAT color if you like being low key. I added factory sport classic (Fuchs replica) wheels and its a killer combo.

Full leather interior is worth it. I don't have a natural leather color, but if ordering would get it.
