ps.bigger is better coz the 997 looked too small compared to its competitors and Porsche realized that.
I dont agree with smaller looks better at all. Just my opinion.

I think the size was changed with only one thing in mind...to make it an easier drive by lessening understeer. (and maybe for a cushier ride)

To the OP...nice review and similar to my experience.

Nice car but your not going out and buying right away.

As I have said all along, this is another variant of the 911, a nice one but not better for everyone at this time.

In the future we may have no choice but for now many potential buyers do.

I thought the seats I sat in were great (14 way). I did feel more confined in the 991. Almost like I was sitting down in the ****pit as opposed to the 997. I also felt I had less room for my legs between the door panel and the center console. Perhaps the new door panel comes in to the leg area a little bit more than the 997? Not sure but when I got out of the 991 and back into my 997 I felt like I had more breathing space if that makes sense.

My only beef with your argument is that you keep saying "bigger". As someone who has driven the the car I didn't feel it at all. I do feel the added performance in the wider front track - it's a different sensation - and the wheels have been moved to the corners of the car. But I actually thought it felt identical in size to the 997 when parking, standing next to, sitting in, cramming into the back seats, etc. I might go as far as to saying I felt even more encapsulated in the (edit) 991.

Are you sure it wasn't an illusion of road feel and larger windscreen? The sub 2" length addition is mostly bumper filling per porsche.

I think your fluidity comments are dead on. Glad Porsche engineers were able to get rid of the "little red wagon" feel of the 997.
I love the new 991 but I definitely will say that it is bigger. It feels bigger to me and I don't feel like I see as much in front of my as I do in my 997. I think the depth of the dash has a lot to do with that. It looks like you can serve a four course meal up there. I actually love everything else about the interior and the new seats are amazing. I didn't get to do any real spirited driving but I will do have to say that the new 911 rides much softer than my 997. The steering feels very different to me, much easier to steer. Exterior-wise the only thing I don't like about the car is the more sharply raked rear window area of the car. I like the more classic Porsche "bubble-butt" look of the car. And the 20" rims are HUGE!! would prefer 19" wheels. Overall, a much improved version of a classic car. Would love to drive one in a few years.

Is bigger and FEELS bigger are 2 different things. It isn't actually bigger - but has a wider front end. You can't see as much of the front due to the flattening of the car and lower seating position. The wheels are pushed to the corners of the car more - a move that was needed because the front bumper overhang of the 997 was extreme.

There is only one 997.2 I would consider taking over the 991. It's the GT3 RS 4.0 version. I know I KNOW - this goes against what I'm about - comfort with speed -

but come on - how can I resist this?: (I don't have a quarter of a million in cash handy - thats how - see below)

I understand what you are saying but the new 911 is 2" longer and the wheelbase has been widened 4". All this you can see and feel and I understand what you are saying. Visually it looks much bigger than the 2" indicate. And I agree, I would take a 991 over the 997 any day of the week if given the choice. It is an evolution of the Porsche design but there are things I still like about the 997 more as I stated before. You are going to be one happy camper in your new ride. Congrats!!

I hear ya, but that 2" is bumper padding - take the bumpers off and measure the core car and it's the same size.

Yeah that 4" wheelbase stretch is certainly noticeable - I totally agree.

catchmyshadow,

Out of curiosity, have you driven the 991? You've expressed approval of the car, but I don't recall reading your specific comments on it.
