DIY - Radiator grill mesh

My front radiators started to look bad (no functional issue) and a fair amount of rubber and debris would accumulate in the radiator openings after each track day.

There is no grill mesh option available on the market yet for the front sport apron, so I had to go for a quick DIY.
I did not want to remove the front bumper, so I worked 'from the outside'.

Step 1: created a model using painter's tape and semi-rigid wires

Step 2: ordered grill mesh (12 x 48" small diamond - black) from customcargrills.com. I think you can find the same grill at your local Home Depot, but ordering online was more convenient and I trusted the quality a bit more.

Step 3: use the model to cut grills for both radiators air intakes

Step 4: just slide the grill in and attach with 4 zip ties

... and here's the final result:

I LOVE IT!! I would have thought they would be available after market. Patent it and sell them. I'll be interested to see if you find the radiators are effective enough this summer, but I'll bet they will be just fine.

Thanks and good question!
Two of the sport apron opening saty completely unobstructed and the grill mesh lets plenty of air through (mesh used for the GT3 Cup seems a lot more obstructing in fact).
I am thinking about a center radiator upgrade anyway... maybe sooner than later

Two major technology disappointments this week end...

GoPro Hero3

I was happy with my Hero2 but I needed one more GoPro and was willing to try the new Hero3 (higher resolution, built in wifi, more compact, improved lower light performance, etc.). It even looked better mounted in the car:

Once put to the test it turned out to be a piece of junk. Despite a recent firmware upgrade, it kept freezing (only a battery removal would solve the problem) and the device would overheat. I then spent some time on the GoPro forums and noticed a lot of users had the same issues. Maybe it can be resolved, but I am not going to waste my time fixing something that should work right out of the box. It will be returned tomorrow and my Hero2 will continue to do the job!

Escort Live Service

There also, Escort just released an updated version of its Escort Live app for the iPhone. I wanted to try it before I invested in the bluetooth accessory and I did well. The "new" app is not even adapted to the iPhone 5 (still the iPhone 4 screen size) and the in-app purchase of the Live service (live warnings for speed traps etc.) is a complete fiasco (error messages, requires to enter the iTunes store password each time you start cheap...). Escort blames it on Apple. I do not care, they are the ones who are marketing a 'solution' that does not work.

My advice is to stay away from those products for now, they do not seem to be mature yet and I find it a shame that two companies leaders in their segments to have launched such poor/unfinished products

Hey Serge,

I had the same problem with my Hero 3. Never had a Hero 2. They replaced my camera and the new one had the same problem, especially when onnecting the LCD Touchscreen attachment. They just came out with a 2nd firmware update in the middle of this month, and it seems to have fixed my problem.

Awesome job on the mesh grill Serge. Would you mind scanning your template and save as a pdf and posting it here so that the rest of us can use it? It seems like a perfect fit. Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I just ordered the mesh screen even though I won't have my car till July. Plenty of time to get it ready to put on as soon as I get my new baby.

Glad it worked out OK for you Dennis!
I brought the Hero3 back the BestBuy and they did not even raise an eyebrow... looks like they are familiar with the issue.

On another note, I signed up on Waze today to see if it is a valuable option to get speed trap alerts, etc. If you have experience with this app/social network, do not hesistate to provide feedback!

I have used WAZE for several years with mixed results. I no longer use it because, there were a lot of false speed traps reported on it. I started to believe that Dekalb County, Fulton County and GA State Troopers were feeding false traps on to the site to slow folks down.
