First, I don't buy the 991 Ring time. Never did. No way. It was not exactly posted by and unbiased source. It was a Porsche factory test time. I'll wait for independent test times. Do I think the 991 will turn a quicker time then the GTS. Probably. But not as quick as the Ring time the Porsche factory posted. Call me skeptical.
I think the times of the 991 and GTS would be very close in an independent test.
Motor Trend in their April issue just compared the figure 8 times of the 991 and GTS. The 991 was .2 seconds faster. The GTS still posted a 24.1 second lap. Motor Trend noted that still put it in rare company.

What was the GTS Ring time? Was it ever tested at the Ring?

Ultimately this 997 vs 991 is a futile argument. The newer car is better or Porsche has failed in its core area of expertise.
OK Let me put this to you 997 die hards. If someone offered you a choice between a brand spanking new fully optioned 997S (or GTS) and a brand spanking new fully optioned 991S for free, which one would you take????? And you knew the 997 was a 7 year old platform as you also knew the 991 was the platform for the next 7 years. Both cars same colour inside and out. Both manual or, both PDK.

Oh my. The GTS was a great car, but now a couple months later it is an outdated POS. Got to feel sorry for anyone that buys a 991.1 when the 991.2 comes along and renders the 991.1 an outdated POS. But heck, the 991.1 was great in its day!

No one has suggested the 997 is a POS....even the point being made in the review. The argument you are now creating with the .1 and .2 is invalid as the 997/991 are entirely different platforms...with 997 platform finished....991 begun.

Looking at the physics, the longer wheelbase, wider track, lighter weight, higher power, more even weight distribution, and lower CG (?) of the 991 all suggest that it should have a higher performance limit on the track (ie, faster lap times). The numbers seem to show that I does, and my own test drives on public roads indicate the same.
But then we need to remember that the typical enthusiast will mostly do spirited driving on public roads, maybe combined with some track use (but still well below the car's limits most of the time). It's not clear to me that the 991 delivers a superior experience for that kind of driving. Personally, I like some bobbing of the front end, feeling of rear weight bias, lively steering wheel, etc.
But then we need to remember that the typical enthusiast will mostly do spirited driving on public roads, maybe combined with some track use (but still well below the car's limits most of the time). i can tell you 108 mph going through hog pen @ vir it steps out nicely! nascar feels great and turn 5a is amazing with a slight lift then back on the power
