So what shortcuts did Porsche get into with the 991 this time?

If you do not like the car, that is both your right and opinion. There are others that rave about it and still others that are somewhere in between.
All I can say is that I prefer it to both the 997.1 that I had and the 997.2 that I currently drive.
I like it enough that I ordered one. If you do not like it the solution is quite simple, do not buy one!

I think you're right. I'm sure he's just having a bit of fun, But i'll play..
Nissan could only dream of having an interior like that. And 997 interior was a LOT better than 996.....don't kid yourself.. And 991 just steps it up further. So that said if 991 and 997 interiors don't cut it then that can only mean the 996 interior belongs in a Kia?....i.e.didn't quite meet Nissans standard.. Oh well, if what you say is true that Nissan and Ikea have interiors like 991 then maybe i better start shopping my furniture at those places in future.
But i do hear you with the full leather tho. IT really changes the feel of the car inside big time. I personally would never get a 911 without it now. My 996 was partial so having been there done that, and not having leather on the dash and door trims I can say FL does make a HUGE difference, and well worth the extra coin.
Personally i think at this stage in the game 911's should have FL as standard given many cheaper japanese and korean cars now come standard with leather these days even if not on the dash. Porsche is just being to mean and greedy.....but for all of that it doesn't discount the fact the 991 interior is a marked improvement even not in FL. And Audi's interior design? Ewww....and what's the story with that big sleeping pillow on the steering wheel.....who ever designed that needs the rocket.
I think Dharn 55 sees it. But to the rest of you.. really, I truly believe the interior is below par... big time. When you look at the quality it is pretty well Infinity standard ( unless you pay an extra 5 k for full leather and some dual color options. It also does not really extrudes the feeling of sitting in and driving in a sports car. Just my 2 cents... Hey I have a 996 and I think the 996 was a great jump ahead from the interior perspective and the 997 was just a little bit better than the 996 in my eyes. Porsche has a greatest interior car designers in the family (Audi) . It boggles the mind that they did not go and ask some advice. The idea of designing a sports car is that it does invite the driver to actively participate in the driving. The idea is not to passively look through the front wind screen and monitor the 7 different displays as an innocent bystander. This is exactly how IKEA would design that interior. Acceptable for the 80 percent of standard folks but not for the 20% die-hard fans.

One minor point. The key fob, while wearing the key chain (which porsche gives you), the key chain ring makes it impossible to release the internal key from the fob, to lock the glove box for example.

OK, so let me start off. I think if the 991 interior would have been presented on a Nissan or an Infinity... the press would have vomited over it from a great height. It is un-inmaginative and looks like they let the Swedish designers for the IKEA chain loose on the design in the deep cold Scandinavian winter without having their Lebenswasser close-by. The middle section is way to high and separates the cabin in boxes to the extent that the interior now looks very small and closed-in. The dash-board lay-out in front of the passenger is ... well... underwhelming. There is just nothing on the inside that extrudes the feeling and the belief that the car is actually a top notch sport car. Just my 3 cents!
I do not an issue with the quality of the materials in the interior. However, I aggree with you regarding your comments on the rising center console. I have not driven a 991 in manual, but it seems it might not be very practical for racing or comfortable for daily driving.
I prefer the layout of the 997 interior because I think it is more "traditional porsche." Having said that, I still believe the 991 is a heck of a car, with significant improvements from the previous generation.
For those who are hardcore purists, I think some of you may have issues with the direction of the 991 (both exterior design and interior design).
The fact of the matter is that Porsche had to take the 911 in this new direction. They did a good enough job of keeping the purists happy along the way as well. I think what you are seeing with the new 991, is Porsche laying the initial groundwork to transition into a new revolutionary direction for porsche.
I would not be suprised to see porsche transition away from a rear engine design to a mid engine design for the 911 in the near future. I think they are waiting for the purists to get a little older first

Ikea designers at work .... not on this one!!
May I respectfully suggest to have a look at this interior and I am thinking that there is NO reason for Porsche not to get close to this. Remember the Bangle Butt... It almost killed the marque off... I just wished for an Porsche interior that gives me the warm and fuzzies... Please don't tell me ... so you buy a Ferrari... because that is not what we are discussing here. The Porsche interior is cold, unimaginative and frankly designed by androids.

Considering my 997tt interior is set up more GT than super sport (full sand beige with makassar), I have no comment..... BTW, where's my slippers?

Interiors
Well, I agree. I think the 996 / 997 interiors are more aligned with the idea that the car is going to be sporty and fast ... ehh . ferocious.. This is my 996 interior in natural leather..

Guess I am in the minority, but the Ferrari interior looks more dated to me than that of the 991.
