991 base vs F30 BMW 335i

I'm in the market for a new car and have been seriously considering a new 991. However one of my buddies made a case for me to get a new 335i instead (talking about a ~4.7-5s 0-60, lots of torque, etc) I won't have a chance to test drive one until later next week, but I'm genuinely curious what you guys think of this? Is a base 991 worth 40k more than a 335i? Anyone have an opportunity to drive both? I've never owned a BMW so not sure what service is like with them, but the economy is tight and it planted a seed in my mind I can't get rid of. Let me know what you guys think.

991 base would be more comparable to a M3, 335i shouldn't even be in the conversation.

With all due respect, and like others have commented...seriously?

I'm a Bimmer guy and would never compare a 991 to an F30. Why is it that 0-60 time is the primary area so many people focus on? You could get an eco-rocket (Sti, Evo) and get comparable numbers, but would you compare those to a 911?

I'm not trying to be a DB, but I also hope you are not a troll

Hmm.. not exactly the kind of apples to oranges question. I don't think anyone on this entire board has driven both of these cars. Closest I have come is the new F30 and the 991S. Hate to break to you but we are literally talking apples to broccoli here. The 3 series it nice but come on man you can't compare them they are completely utterly different in so many ways!

Let me put it to you this way, after my test drive @BMW the rep asks (begs nicely) me to drive my Targa4S. Once the drive is done he goes on record as saying there really "is no substitute". I love my car and a 4 door sedan (3 series) is never going to give you that same feeling a 911 does. So if can afford the 991 base then go for it you will never ever look back - get it in 7MT!

+1 I would add that you don't even have to drive them to have an answer and I now have a 335 sedan.

I've driven both (991 on a test drive and the 335i as a loaner). Simply no comparison whatsoever other than they both have four wheels and an engine. Not once has the thought entered my mind to go "try" a 335i as a alternative to the 991 or 997.

Too different. Do you want 40k in your pocket out is that not an issue.

I actually currently have both a 997.2 and a 335xi, as well as a 991 and a new 335 coupe on order. Two totally different cars. The BMW is a very nice car, smooth quiet and pretty quick but it is no 911. BMW service is great, everything is included.

My take is that the BMW is a luxury car that is sporty and the Porsche is a sports car that has a bit of luxury. If you think that the Porsche is a 9/10ths car, look at thr BMW as a 6/10ths car.

Both are very nice buy are designed for two different tasks.

Test drive the BMW first otherwise you will never drive one again. You are not comparing like cars at all. Possibly the M3 but even then... They are in such different class it is actually pretty amazing. While the 335 is a great car you will always be thinking why- 911 everyday of the week...
I have owned 3 previous M3's and I always felt it cannot get much better. Well, it did the day I drove to the Porsche dealer.

You know, I went through this a couple years ago. I wanted a Porsche, and the wife had her Cayman S. I was sitting on the fence for a while because the Cayman seemed too small and every 911 I sat in felt bigger, but not by enough. I wanted more luxury or comfort or space or ??? I was looking at the M3, but I ended up getting a BMW X5M. Very nice, fast SUV. It had all the room and creature comforts that I thought were important. At the time I also had a Shelby GT500, so I thought my sporting needs were somewhat salved. But, I quickly learned that there is just something about a Porsche that draws you in. It grabs at your soul and demands you to join its clan. I have since sold both the X5 and the Shelby and I am now waiting for the car I really want. Especially now since it is roomier (by a small margin) and more feature rich.
so, my advise to you is to not ignore the magnetic pull that Porsche seems to have. Its like the hobbits ring, its my Precious! otherwise you will always be saying "hmm, maybe I should have..."
Besides, you can get a beamer when your older and those throttle desires are somewhat faded.

I had 335xi & 997.2 C2S, each for a day to enjoy...

Well, I have not thought of 3 series until I saw this thread in a "991" forum!

Totally different cars.... 335xi was really, really nice, and maybe torque (and low speed acceleration) was noticeably better than 911. But in terms of overall driving experience, 911 was way~ better than 335xi, no comparison.

You should experience yourself, but I don't think 15 minute test drive will be good enough though...

What!!!.. And questioning whether a 991 is worth 40K more than a 335??? What are you guys smoking. To be even asking something so completely and utterly rediculous can only mean this thread is either a bad joke or just blatant trolling.
