I agree with buckwheat that comments on the surface addressed the 991 in general, but the fact that he was sitting in a base model no doubt colored his view point. But hp is an issue in all brands as they all offer lower and higher hp options, and the higher ones are just better.
yes..if your going to option out a base go "S"...but nothing wrong with a low optioned base....

still beats 99% of non Porsche cars on the road.

No disagreement there.

It is also worth noting a manual base car is about 100 pounds lighter than an S pdk which in my opinion is significant

I think this is one man's opinion and a 997 owner's at that... I assure you if he had a 991 in his garage his disposition would be a whole lot different

Assure nothing. He gave an opinion. His. That's all. And his opinion is all that matters to him and yours is all that matters to you.

Here we go... amazing how most of your posts in the 991 section are negative, like you're angry and are taking it out on people whom come here to share their joy and excitement about the new 991.

Yes I've noticed your rather assertive/aggressive predisposition before and thought I'd ignore them... but please do not expose me to it directly.

People whom tell others 6speeders what to say or not can do so at the more confrontational political or of topic threads.

I'll leave you to your opinions, leave me to mine.

Funny, you bring up the 997 driver and assume that he would love to have one in his garage, going against his so-so review and I'm the negative one telling people what they should think.

I just pointed out it think it's wrong to assure of us anything. You not in the know for all of us.

Now you can go on ignoring me. You will feel better.

I found EVO's review quite telling.

What he was effectively saying is that (in his hands) the improved 991 chassis makes it easier to exploit the maximum power of the engine whereas, the earlier 997 chassis made the car more "challenging" (for a person with his level of driving skills). He confirms this further by opining GT3 and 991TT should present as a better "challenge" (again for the highly skilled driver).

You guys may recall reading similar reviews where the Cayman S's chassis was deemed capable of a lot more power than the engine in the car by the expert drivers. And while it was quoted as being an incredibly well balanced drive it was often said it would be more challenging again with a GT3 powerplant. Much the same thing has happened here with 991 where the capability of the new chassis allows the driver to better manage the capability of the drive train in the base cars.

That said the 3.4 and 3.8 engined 991's are sufficiently powerful yet still very challenging for 90/95% of 911 drivers and going by this review, the new chassis only makes the car more reassuring and easier to exploit at the limit. That is actually a really good thing for most 911 drivers.

On the other topic of 997 vs 997s and which is the "better" to buy: Imo a stock 3.4 991 is more than enough car for the majority of 911 owners as it's a really sweet and well sorted package. And, with the manual box would be even more challenging again .

So for me EVO's review would not make me rethink anything if i was ordering a stock 3.4 991 car and the 100lbs lighter weight would also help offset the power advantage of the 3.8 S. Plus if you only planned holding the car for a couple of years it would prove better financially. Cheaper to buy, and more affordable on the used market. And options have always been a user pay experience anyway.

I paid $76k for my brand new 2009 base 911 in 11/2008 and just sold it for $65k nearly 3 1/2 years later for a loss of 11k. A lightly optioned base car will depreciate less than any alternative in the line up which is one of the reasons I buy them.

I would also disagree that "ponies are everything". A Ford Mustang GT500 Shelby or whatever they call it may have 500 bhp but is it a more rewarding drive than any 997/991 base/S or GT3 all of which have significantly less hp? I think not. A 1973 2.7 Carrera RS had what? something like 235hp? yet it is widely regarded as one of the best 911's of all time.

I've owned a 997.1S and I have to say the GT500 in its 550hp 2011 form is a blast. The 2013 model with 650hp and even tighter handling will be even more fun for 1/2 the price. Would I rather have a 991, of course.

I'm sure most have seen this but thought I'd post it to give a comparison between the previous EVO host and this one.
Notice the difference in energy and genuine excitement of Chris Harris vs the other guy...
Chris is still critical but also gives credit where credit is due.

Yes. A much more enthusiastic review. And for Chris Harris to say the handling dynamics of the 991 chassis is a step up on a 997GT3RS sure doesn't leave much of an argument left for 996/997 diehards. He also says the power train is better managed by 991's superior chassis, and pdk is a much better offering than 997....not that any of this should surprise anyone.....

The Chris Harris review is a good one. As I have stated in other posts if you have the skills the 991 will reward you with unequaled performance and thrills for a street car.

For many others its a car that is easy to drive fast with out getting into trouble.

The question for many buyers (and I have seen this written in many test drive reports) is that the ease of driving the car fast, but not at it's limits, has taken some of the enjoyment, thrill, feel, (whatever you want to call it) out of the car and that is their pause in buying.

The 991 is a great car and an advancement in the 911 line. But it's not for everyone at this time.

franki68 is infamous around these parts
Its the press...

Evo magazine did a 991s vs gt3 comparison and said the 991 is the better car 364 days of the year.

Autocar magazine did a r8 vs gtr vs 991s ,they concluded that the 991 s was the winner.

People get carried away with this stuff, just drive one yourself and make your own mind up.I drove one and thought it a huge improvement over the gen 2 997 models ,.I didnt think the steering feel was much less than 997gen 2 models I have driven, but the engine is a lot better,it sounds tons better and the handling is on a different planet .

I think it's more like 65+/- lbs, still not insignificant of course.

350hp is plenty for some.

Aamersa, i'm not sure if you realize but you comments are likely insulting some of those getting a C2. Just thought I'd go out on a limb and post that here.
