My impressions of my new 991

My impressions of my new 991
First a bit of backround...
This will be my 4th 911. I have had a 996, 997.1 and a 997.2 all BASE cars wirh manual transmissions.
I have had a fair amount of performance driving experience over the years with track time in SCCA C and D production as well as Formula Ford and Formula Atlantic. I have owned 7 different BMW M cars.
The car....
991 Base Coupe
Ruby Red
Agate/Pebble Grey Full Leather
Bose Audio Package (w/ XM, HD radio and 6 disc changer)
Premium Package
Heated Steering Wheel
20" Carrera Wheels (w/ Color crests)
PASM
Seat Ventilation
Sport Chrono
Sunroof
Model Designation "911"
My auto usage....
This is my daily driver and will not see the track. For this reason I elected the BASE over the S. I also opted to not get PSE as I quite liked the quite when on the highway but the sound does change when you get on the throttle a bit. Yes, I know I have built a GT car not a "real" viseral 911 but that was my intent. To have a GT with the ability to turn into a sports car not a GT3 that is not an great long trip daily driver.
My thoughts....
Steering - This car is easily more responsive than my 997.2. It is by no means vague and follows steering inputs very accurately.
BASE vs S - Much debated, but for me the S only meant I would spend about $10K more and no doubt end up with more tickets! The 3.4 performs very well, pretty much on par with my 997.2
Audio - Having had the Bose in the 997.2 I was prepared for average sound quality. I must say that I have been surprised that to my ears it sounds much better than the Bose in the 997.2. Definately not close to the Burnmiester, but I just could not justify the extra $$$$.
Ride Quality - In any PASM mode (sport / normal) I find this to be a much smoother ride than the standard suspension in the 997.2. It handles the bumps and railroad tracks a lot better. It is less "jittery" and resists tramlining better. I did have 19" Turbo wheels on the 997.2.
Fuel Economy - I seem to be getting about 24 MPG avarage (55% urban / 45% highway). My highway speeds tend to be on the high side (hope no local troopers see this ), 85-100 MPH. Think it will only get better as time passes.
Manual Transmission - Very smooth. The shifter is in a great position and for all of the comments about the pedals, I find them to be exactly where I would want them. Heel - Toe is perfect. The throw seems shorted than the 997.2, but long then the short shift kit. I would expect this. At 3000 RPM in 7th you are at 100MPH, the 997.2 is about 80MPH in 6th (same for the 991).
Sunroof - I was torn on this one but I am glad I got it. With the windows closed and the roof open it is very quiet and does not buffet up to about 90MPH. Very little wind into the cabin too. I don't care what it looks like open, when it is open I am in the car and can't see it!
Other things - Love the new headlights! They are much brighter than the 997.2. I also light the way they turn in corners, never thought I would but it is really a big difference.
Exhaust - Compared to the 997.2 it is quieter during normal, steady speed higway driving, but when you get on the throttle it really comes alive with a very nice deep roar. Not so much that it is overbearing, but it lets you know there is something there. Sorry, I forgot this the first time.
Love the new interior. I know quite a few will disagree, but I liked it in the Panamera and like it here. Personal preference. Remember, I look at this as a GT car not a 993 or 996.
Sorry for the long post and accept my apologies if I have offended anyone with this post.......

great summary.
do you think some of your perspective on the Bose is not that it is better than the 997.2, rather that the interior road noise is less & hence more stereo clarity?
the tire noise in my turbo was really intrusive; the stereo really had to fight over that noise sometimes.
surprised no comment on engine sounds vs the 997.2?

Very nice, it's the first picture of a Ruby Red I have seen so far. The interior combo goes very well with that color, you have great taste!
Congratulation to a beautiful car!

19th Hole .... Great write up ... your car looks beautiful !!!
Even though it's not my thread I figured I'd chime in ...
I had the Bose in my 997.1 and have the Base system in the 991 and find the Base system is much better sounding ... some of it I am sure is due to the quieter interior. Keep in mind I am not a big audio buy and listen mostly to Talk radio like Howard Stern.
I can tell you the 991S I have has an Exotic sound especially at start up and you really have the option of listening to the car or not between the 'sport' button which enhances the interior sound and the PSE which enhances the exterior sound (and some interior as well)
