When to add oil?

When to add oil?
Hi, noob question. Here we go:
My 991 is sipping a bit of oil, down 2 or 3 notches from the top on the level display (in the middle now) as I finish break-in (around 1800 miles presently).
When should I top her off? Should I wait for it to get lower, or does it even matter?

when light comes on, keep a quart in trunk... add half... drive and check.... if needed add other half...
997.2 when light came on it was 1.5 low so 1 was perfect, 991... check it out first..
before light comes on=just too much work to add little by little..

Check oil level (with intention to fill to the top) ONLY after 30 minute or more drive(s) to make sure the engine is HOT and the water in the oil has been completely boiled off because that is the only time the amount of OIL in the pan will be correcty represented on the display.

non oil drinkin' 09 997.2...
Good to know, I have 10,600 miles on clock and have never added oil. Tracked car once and, hate to admit, but hit 130 at least once weekly on the Florida TRpke and/or I95 for quick bursts..........

Just checked mine after 2800 miles and I added half a quart (which still left a line or two down from the top). My guess is 5 to 7K might eat a full quart but it also depends on the kind of driving you are doing.

wow...perhaps they forgot to put oil at the factory?

I'd like to think that Porsche has controls in place that would ensure proper oil fill and that's why I suspect this is something more - maybe a faulty sensor? Car is at the dealer and I am awaiting word.

Although its not required I always take my P car to the dealer for an oil change after the break-in period. Let them top it off to the correct level and then see how the next few thousand miles go. I know there are those who feel this as being premature etc.(I don't want to debate about it) but its just what I do and have seen benefit in doing so.

Got a ride to work for now but if car will be there beyond this afternoon the dealer will provide one. The dealer is great and I can't fault them. Stuff like this happens.
