991 with 8 cylinder Boxer engine
Rumor has it that the 991 can accomodate an 8 cylinder Boxer engine. This info was hinted by Porsche staff at a training site for Porsche sales staff. Which model do you think it will be? Turbo, GT2, GT3 or .....

My guess is none of the above. I don't think the factory will ever put an 8 cylinder into the rear of a 911 car. They can get plenty of power out of the 6. That being said, I have to say, not much sounds nicer than a small displacement 8 like the F-cars have such as the 430's and 458's. But those are V's not boxer designs. I just don't see it happening tho.

Even the rumored 960/961 is reported to have a Flat-6. If that's the case, no way a 911 will have more than 6 cylinders. Like what was just said: Porsche can get plenty of power out of a 6, and I don't think there is enough space to shove a couple of more cylinders behind the rear wheels, even with the extended wheelbase of the 991.

I don't think it will happen. Porsche is doing all it can to squeeze MPG out of the current car with things like auto stop, sailing, PDK transmissions that shift into 7th gear at 40 mph. It doesn't make sense that they would put an 8 cyl engine in the car. You are more likely to see a hybrid power plant before an 8 cyl. In fact, I have read that the primary reason for stretching the wheelbase on the 991 was to provide room for a hybrid power plant.

I don't think Porsche will mess with the concept either.
But as far as room, RUF RGT-8:

I can't wait for Boxer 8. I hope they put it into the Turbo and call it something else.... There is no substitue for 8 Cyl. Who cares about PDK going to 5th gear to save gas. This destroys the experience of driving a Porsche....

This is a joke right? PLEASE say this post was a joke

The degree numers are reflective of the amount of degree's in which the cylinders are proportioned to one another. Example, boxer motors are 180 degree horizontally opposed cylinders. That means the pistons on each bank face exactly 180 degrees away from one another. A 90 degree V8 means the cylinders are at a 90 degree angle from each other. Lopping 2 cylinders off or adding two cylinders doesnt change the angle in which the cylinders sit. Porsche even developed a flat 16 that never came to fruition. But if it had, it still woulda been a 180'degree horizontally opposed flat 16 Boxer motor. If it was a joke...Good one ya got me!

I wanna hear the explanation of rotary engines......

If both rods from opposite side connect to the same crank journal it does make a difference.
That is the way v8's and v6's are made. It is just geometry. It is not a joke. I have rebuilt many engines. I have never rebuilt a flat six however.
