Great Drives

Inspired by Haku's "Blown away" thread, let's start a new, pic-heavy thread on "great drives"! Maps, course descriptions, etc. are welcome, too, as are tips on how to record drives and other tricks. Goal is to share and enjoy each others' drives.

(Note to mods: can we make this sticky?)

Thanks for kicking this off C. This thread is a good idea of yours and will be useful to many.

Here's a VERY amateur hand-held 3 minute video I took of my drive today. Apologies for the poor quality... no GoPro here!... Need to get one.

It's in Franklin County TN. Unfortunately the poor quality of my video fails to convey the beauty of the roads here.

Franklin County, TN. 991S Sport Chrono/Sport Exhaust

Just one more pic.

CA: La Honda Rd - Skyline Blvd - Black Rd

Alright, long time no post due to travel, but I was finally able to take her out yesterday for a short spin in the Santa Cruz mountains. I had planned a longer and twistier tour but Caltrans decided to chip-seal most of Skyline Blvd, which condemned me to going 30 mph on loads of loose gravel

Nevertheless, a great ride and looking forward to more!

Near Windy Hill Open Space Preserve:

Near Monte Bello Open Space Preserve (you can clearly see the new chip-seal on the second photo; what a bummer, Skyline was perfect before!):

On Black Road:

What will happen to those loose gravel eventually? Did they stop at 84/Woodside?

Haku, that is a great road, but you can see it is quite a bit more narrower compare to your play ground. ; D. I wish it was a little wider, and they should really add a bike lane.

I don't know. I started Skyline at 84/La Honda and didn't look north but I read since that they also chip-sealed for a few miles on the other side.

The gravel is supposed to be swept off by rain over the course of a few weeks, but I'm not too sure. They used pretty big stones (1/4" or so it seems) and they make for a pretty scary sound in the 991 above 25 mph. It may take longer than that and even then the road noise will likely be deafening. So much for a great road ruined!

Just wait till I post pictures of Alpine or even Tagunitas Creek Rd! Those are single-lane roads where precision driving at 40 mph feels like Laguna Seca

That is just unfortunate... maybe it will be nice like before after this winter with some rain. Yap, the sound of those rocks hitting the bottom of the car was really bad.

Mt Hamilton

Took her out today again for an Indian Summer drive--in November! This time on CA 130, Mt Hamilton Rd and returning towards San Jose via Quimby Rd. What a stunning drive. Warning, this post is pic-heavy! Enjoy!

Edit: forgot to mention road conditions. First off, there is almost no traffic, even on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. If I hadn't stopped to take pictures, I might have perhaps met only 3-5 other cars. The only traffic on the road seem to be a few bicyclists. The lower part of Mt Hamilton Rd (CA 130) is chip-sealed for a few miles, but without loose gravel, so quite manageable. I don't remember exactly from where to where, but I wouldn't be surprised if the chip seal ended at a county line. From Grant County Park onwards, the road is near-perfect, with a great surface. When it was a bit narrow at times before, it is definitely a two-lane road now, perfect for mountain driving.

First off, the map (see also https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid...62826,0.081797):

On lower Mt Hamilton Rd:

Further up on Mt Hamilton Rd:

Even further up, near the Observatory:

Finally, a dramatic descend into San Jose on Quimby Rd:

Thanks for posting this, I got to find time to head up that way now that 35 north is filled with loose gravels
