new Porsche Cayman any day over 911

Im about take ownership of Carrera 4S in a week or so .. However, It does not surprise me that the Cayman is hailed as better car than the 911.. the writing has been on the wall since the last Cayman R ..
I dont think there is a "logical" justification to buy 991 over Cayman .. In my opinion .. pound for pound it trumps the 991 .. even Porsche Driving instructors "silently" say so.. and not only the Cayman other cars like the M3 (or upcoming M4) also provide strong arguments vs 991...
The fact of the matter is that handling dynamics are affected mostly by weight and the Cayman will always have the better bargain on that front .. add to that the mid engine configuration and is the result such a surprised to a bunch of automotive connoisseurs especially when you consider the relatively small power differential ?!
Nonetheless, its not all about handling and there is more to buying a sports car than common sense..i mean if every 1 applied actual common sense then none of these cars will exist and we all be satisfied sensible/practical cars..
As such I agree with Sid that its an emotional issue .. but at the same time I dont think that's a sufficient reason to say (outright) that 911 is better than the Cayman. Also I don't blame journalists for saying so cos they are suppose to be objective (as much as possible) and not provide a review purely on emotions.. A prime example is Jeremy Clarckson who stated on many occasions (for the benefit of his audience) that particular car is terrible (facts provided) .. but loves it for one reason or another (emotional decision).. On the other hand he states that Porsches are great cars well engineered and made (fact) but hates them for some reason (emotional decision)
As for me I ordered the C4S knowing the Cayman will be coming out and could be better and cheaper.. but I made my choice and feel more than content .. no need to explain why or defend 991.. all i can say to the Cayman camp thumbs up and enjoy ..but parked next to each other ill be feeling superior

I've had my car for not even 2 months and there have been 3-4 happenings just like this for me.

Hi, please take it easy. I just wanted to share what did Autocar say about the new CS and wonder if anyone consider to get 981S over base 991 since I did that 2 years ago. I did not choose 987S over base 997 because reviewer saying that 987S has a superior handling but i drove both cars and I like the mid engine car's cornering speed/feel more.
When a very first review of 991 came out and reviewers saying that 991 is cornering like the Cayman, so i think this is great! even better with more power then i sold my 987S and jumped to a very first batch of 991S. My 991S with PDDC turns like a proper mid engine car and yes, i can do wheel's spinning on the exits which feel great! I never test drive 981 but it has to be something special.
I love both cars and nothing wrong for being a porsche fan (not only 911 fan), and now i am looking forward to get the new Macan.
This is the picture showing my 991S vs my sold CS.

I guess your not the troll some people had you made out to be for posting a review that brought up the 991.

Why do threads like this turn into pissing contests? Its almost as one has to rationalize their purchase. So the journalist thinks the Cayman is better and???? Ive seen this on the BMW boards when the 1M came out. "Oh its not a real M......." Regardless its a damn good car. The Boxster and Cayman will never replace the 911 but why knock it? Take it for what it is a good car. As with the Boxster I think the Cayman will get great reviews even from Chris Harris and the boys at the BBC. Can I afford an C2S yes! However, if the Cayman S puts a big smile on my face so be it.

I prefer the 987S over the 997S.
I prefer the 997 Turbo over the 987S.
I haven't driven the new Cayman S (I plan to as soon as one comes to my area), but if there is as much improvement of the Cayman S as the Carrera S, I wonder what would happen.
Just because something has a higher tag, doesn't necessarily mean it's the better choice for all drivers.

The Cayman is the perfect 911. The 2 seats in the back of 911 is a joke. Maybe only less than 1% of the owners use these Lilliputian places. Put the 3.8 in the Cayman and there is no more reason to the 911 to exist. And for people who really want back seats, they can go with the Panamera or the Cayenne. I think that Porsche is in a funny situation ... little brother is getting stronger
I use my rear seats a lot - it was the only reason I chose a 911 over the Cayman. The seats may be small, but as I tell my friends/visiting family members/coworkers/etc. - they are better than walking!

And not so hard for others...

To each his own. It's a personal preference. If the price tags were switched, it would have no effect whatsoever on my choice. In fact, I'd be delighted.

I've owned 911s, a 944S2, a 968, several Boxsters, and now a 991. Everyone of them is a delight. Just like beautiful women, which one is best is so subjective and situation dependant, arguing about it is an exercise in futility.
The actual price tag on a loaded 3.4L 981c vs. a moderately optioned 3.4L 991 is very close, and given that a 991 discount from MSRP will be higher than the soon to be released Cayman...they may, for now, be the same cost out the door.
I may need a bigger garage

My personal point of view is, the 911 for me is more of an icon, historical and legendary piece of art. It is for me more than handling and acceleration, i do like the cayman and i like the new cayman very much, and i always wanted to own one, but when the right time came and i had a choice, i definitely went for my dream car.
