Every Porsche that arrives at port undergoes a PDI - part of the process is a visual inspection for damage and remedy to repair.

From Porsche's warranty booklet:

Pre-Delivery Inspection

Porsche seeks to provide the highest degree of customer satisfaction possible. Accordingly, repairs and replacements are made at different stages of the delivery process in order to assure high standards of qual- ity for your new car.
Every effort is made to detect and remedy even the slightest flaws, or damage, at inspection sites at the factory, after transportation from the factory, and at the dealer location. Damage to, or flaws in the mechani- cal systems, body, electrical system, frame, paint, trim, interior, and other components of your car, whether occurring at the factory or during transportation may have been repaired or replaced.
There is a good chance that those of you who think you received a perfect car had repairs done prior to arriving at the dealership. And the cars are still sold as "new."

Wow - and here we all are thinking we are getting pristine cars, where in fact they may have been touched up, refined, etc. Kinda sucks, but I guess that is the way of the world. Being most Porsche owners have OCD, if every issue (light scratch, small dent) was revealed, we'd never get the car!!

True, but I'm getting the sense that the damage to the OP's car was quite extensive and more than just some minor dings and scratches that could be simply touched up. Otherwise the dealer would not have offered such a drastic option as to replace the entire door. Hence my previous post about ordering another car...

Hopefully with less crappy dealers, with less idiots working at them. Maybe we'll actually have people who like working at dealerships, who know about cars, and maybe how to run a business, with happy employees, etc...

(Yes, I'm one of those people who thinks most car dealerships are populated with idiots - too much evidence supporting my position)

Pretty cool idea. It would work for me.

Thanks all for your thoughts, comments, advice. I have decided to pass on the car and have a new one built.

While it really bothers me that there will be another 911 out there with the same, unique build that I spec'd, I just can't get comfortable with the thought of a car that is not factory-original. (Thanks to ScottKelly911 for the YouTube video-:})

I'll provide more specifics on the process I am going through with the dealer and Porsche-corporate as soon as I have the new build date confirmed.

I like your decision and would have done the same thing. The wait won't be as bad as you think and when you get it, the wait will be worth it.

Hej ... it's only a car - guys.

I just picked up a new C4S ... and I never wanted to wait another 3-5 months for the next car .... because of only a new door ... come on.

I believe reading too much Forums like this ... makes you too sensitive and you're loosing the feel for real live ... you are too much involved in Porsche things while reading here ... but please: stay normal.

I'm 100% sure that the color will perfectly match the car color ... and nobody knows the difference ....

Would you desert your love because of her new patella ....

Only my thoughts

I would be very disappointed if there were undisclosed paint repairs. I might be willing to accept that one that was not ordered could have some blemishes / repairs and sold at a discount (and documented in the maintenance log book), but when they build one for you I think it should be pristine. The same thing goes with replacement of an engine or transmission. Someday, someone will be wanting all the numbers to match.

This is what makes the world go round- differing opinions. It may be acceptable to some, but the ethical thing is to document it in the logbook and disclose it at every sale.

That was my thought Bobby. When the OP gets a new car or a different one off the lot, someone else will get this car with a new door off the lot as their 'new' car. Maybe another reason to order a new car from the factory if you have a choice.

I'm glad that you were able to come to a decision that you will be able to live with and not second guess yourself. The added wait is a bummer, but will be well worth it. I'm glad the video helped you make your choice. I think that video is amazing and really shows how much complexity goes into the production of the new 991's including but not limited to the paint process. Hopefully they'll throw you a bone and give you something nice to add to your car as a freebie and if not, well at least you'll have the peace of mind knowing that your car will be perfect from the get go.

Its a car not a damaged heart valve. When a rock fly's up from another car and hits it are you going to trade it in? That's going to be a long wait......
