Somebody please explain to me the rationale for parking back-in first. I see it done a lot and it makes me feel that the person is shady because in Florida there are no front plates. It also makes for a faster getaway in case the driver is up to no good. Other than that, I don't get why people are fascinated with backing in.

I personally back in every time, because I love to stare at my cars front when i walk back and because I don't want to get hit on my way out....I know it doesn't make too much sense....and I am definitely SHADY even if I have a front plate!

^^ It's easier to see what's going on when you pull out of a spot when you are parked tail first.

It may also have to do with habit, doing harder maneuver on the way in and leaving the easy part for later.
Kind like doing the hard work (earned) first, and enjoy (spent) later, owning vs renting kind of thing.

A lot depends on where you are. If you’re where there are large crowds, movie, ball game, etc., all leaving at the same time, it’s easier just to pull out when you’re leaving. Backing out, you will need a lot of space which you may not get for a while. Also, it's easy to back into an empty spot because you know it's empty. When you leave, you can’t see nearly as well to tell if it's clear. If there is a large vehicle parked next to you, an SUV, van, etc., you have to back the rear of your vehicle (the precious P-Car) out into the lane of travel before you can even see if it's clear or not.

It is also easier to park closer to a wall on the passenger side, leaving more room to open the door on the driver side.

Perfect explanation! Just yesterday I had a hard time backing out of a space because of inability to see oncoming traffic (I was in a Cadillac CTS loaner as my Bentley is in the shop). Now makes sense to me so I will consider doing this in the future myself when necessary. Thans for the explanation!

In some private commercial places I know, it's mandatory to park back in because in case of emergency, the carpark need to be evacuated immediately for the purpose of mass assembly area.

This, I got into an accident once backing out. I looked and saw a VW past me on the passenger mirror so I thought it was good to back out. Then he saw some guy pull out and reverse for that spot, we both reversed at the same time and hit each other. Thank god I was in my minivan and had a little scratch on the rear bumper. I learned from that and only parked w/o having to reverse to get out.

Right! It's backing into a known static environment (the parking space) instead of backing out into an unknown dynamic environment (the parking lot/street/pedestrians/other cars driving by etc).

I'm convinced. I'm a new believer and no longer a hater.

As above explanations, I park back-in every time, unless impractical for that space.

I do the same thing when I park in my garage. I'm more likely to be in a rush leaving (when I can just drive away) than when I come home (so I take the time to carefully back in). For me, it's probably also a vestige of my prior cars which had parking sensors/ back-up cameras only in the rear. I have front and rear park assist, so I would have the same electronic nannies warning me no matter which way I park.
