Happy Father's Day & Wonderful Story
Trust all the Dad's here are getting just what they deserve today. Here is a wonderful father-son story, made even more interesting since we haven't discussed the manual/automatic dichotomy in quite some time.

Thanks for posting the story. I remember, only too well, the hours I spent trying to teach my two daughters to drive a manual transmission. Looking back now, I probably wanted them to know the joy of "really" controlling a car and enjoy it as much as I do! Never thought they would "get the feel" of the clutch pedal!
Didn't turn out too bad as my one daughter purchased a Boxster with a five speed which she still has ten years later. Now driven by my son-in-law more than my daughter because of the children and car seat requirements. She still sneaks out alone to take a short trip and says she misses the stick shift! I notice when I drive with her in their turbo Cayenne, she does every once in awhile shift the auto gears herself.
When my other daughter bought her first vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder with a stick shift, you should have seen the salesman's face when my daughter said that it had to be a stick! Still to this day not sure she purchased it because she realized that there was no extra charge for the stick and the automatic was an option.
Enjoyed the story and e-mailed it to my two daughters to read on this Father's Day.

Very nice story. Thanks for sharing.
Back in the 60s I learned to drive in my father's big Pontiac with hydromatic but quickly learned how to drive a stick in my brother's Beetle. At 16 I bought my first car, a 1960 TR3 and quickly mastered the art of stick shifting while quickly killing the synchros with my efforts at speed shifting. I've loved manual trannies ever since. That being said, I'm eagerly anticipating owning and driving the ultimate transmission, the PDK.

It's a great story. We should cherish time with our dads. I say this as I lost my dad on Father's Day (June 16, 1999) while in the final year of my Eng school far away from him. He was just 56 and perfectly healthy - blood clot was the reason. Now I spend time with my kids as much as I can and celebrate this day by remembering my dad.
Happy Father's Day guys!
