Paint quality of 991s

Is it just me or has anyone else found the paint quality of the 991 to be disappointing for the price we pay for theses cars? My gripe is with the rear bumper. On my car, the paint seems to be very soft and easily marred here. Has anyone else experienced this?

i agree. not good enough vs far cheaper cars. way too much orange peel. Lexus is better, heck I've seen 50k caddies w/ better paint jobs. I think Aston's are awesome.

+10

I've owned 10 Porsche's and the 991 paint is the worst.

Make sure you get some touch up paint when you complete your purchase.

The new eco paint shop is not the quality of the 997's

As the world is moving towards more enviro-friendly ways, more demand is put on paint manufacturers to make water-based paints. We see this in all the cars we detail. I can tell you hands-down, one of the best prepped cars come from Porsche. Most our business is Porsche. We do have clients with Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lambo, and Porsche is better prepped than all previously mentioned. However, once properly detailed, Aston Martin is pretty amazing paint. The new 991 does come with more imperfections such as dust in the paint, lack of proper paint amount in door jams, etc. It seems all high-end manufacturers are trying to use less paint where people don't see.

I feel like the car needs to be resprayed and with extra layers of clear coat added.

Actually, when we measure the paint, it's around the same thickness as always. For some reason, there are simply more flaws than ever before. Very surprising coming from Porsche.

Anyone have a good video or article that elaborates on new paint shop at factory?

I'm surprised to hear this given that much of the paint job is painted by robots. Thank goodness mine is perfect (my 2009 had one very small imperfection).

Moe - if you watch (google it) the national geographic super factories on the 991, they spend a good deal of time on the totally new paint building Porsche made for the 991.

There are a bunch of little nicks in my paint as well as swirl marks that will not buff out. Really bugging me. I am very surprised that the paint is so "soft". My 993 was bulletproof.

The paint on the bumpers is horrible compared to the rest of the car. I'm guessing the paint has to be softer here due to the constant flexing. Look at the thread with the 991 that got rear ended, there is barely any damage on the surface.

I got basic black on my 991 and the paint looks absolutely perfect. Any swirl mark that are in the clear can be remorved by an expert detailer that does total color correction. Check with local areas shops on the anme of a good detailer.

I'm so used to have mediocre paint at this point (on new cars) that I stopped looking too closely. This is my third Porsche and it is by far the worst paint yet. The M3 wasn't any better either.

I have a white 99S Cab and note no paint imperfections at all.

Factory or Dealer?

my dealer is great. No prep work is done on the paint. None! I insist on doing it myself. No buffing, etc. at all.

Interesting, but my white/red '10 RS is nearly perfect except for a small fingerprint in the paint on the roof above the passenger side door. Maybe a signature from the factory of sorts!

Seriously, if the paint is seriously flawed, I wouldn't accept delivery.
