Where are you guys finding these specs on your paint? Lower portion of the car, bottom of doors, rear bumper, etc? Is it on hood, roof, top of fenders, etc. ?

Is anyone in SoCal having this issue?

MoeMistry,

Rear Bumper (9 small brown spots ranging in size from "head of a pin" to slightly smaller). I am in Houston though. Any specialists like you in the area? I would really prefer NOT to have to paint.

I will try to post pictures within a day or so.

Thanks

Exactly where on rear bumper?

Do you apply any products to your tires to condition them?

I think the water based paint has been used for about 10 years.

Get a new car from PCNA

First question I just got when trading my last car in was "was there any paint redone". Had to sign a paper attesting to this. When you buy a new car you have a "contract" with the dealer to get a vehicle in perfect condition.

You will have diminished value if they respray or replace body parts. PCNA will need to replace the car for you. It will be fixed and resold but that's not your issue.

I had a similar situation with a Volvo and they made good on it without any big fuss.

Good luck!!!

+1 to Zelig's comment/advice. The last BMW I traded in at the BMW dealership where I bought and serviced all my cars the only thing they checked was paint density on the panels where an accident/repair might have happened. It was obvious that if the car had been repaired whoever did it was a modern Michelangelo but that didn't matter. They told me in no uncertain terms that if it had been hit and resprayed, no matter how good the job, the trade-in value would have been very different.

New Car from PCNA?

I have a very good relationship with the dealer - I purchased many cars from the GM and have always been treated like family. When the issue was identified I brought up replacing the car and while thankfully this is now resolved, the indication he gave me as that in similar situations in the past, PCNA offered to repaint the car and again the dealership stepped up to lock-in a trade value. If that is the alternative that's ultimately offered, I would counter with having the dealership buy the car back and wither order or find you another one. For me, I've only had the car 3 weeks and have 250 miles on it. For others with 2000+ miles, it might not make sense (taking some hit for the mileage). When I say that the dealership would by the car back, they should buy it back at your cost less some agreed upon haircut per mile, similar to what a lease might reflect - ie. $1 a mile, whatever to try to be fair to everyone. I think if that route is pursued, people might have more luck as I just don't see PCNA buying the cars back, but who knows and one step at a time and obviously I wish everyone luck here and am thankful that this forum exists and people on it are so great!

Sorry, thought I saw somewhere that the paint was modified for the new paint factory.

Not sure what changes Porsche made with the new factory and paint facility, but the environmentalists made auto manufacturers change over to water based paint quite a few years ago. The primer and clear coat may still be solvent based in some countries, but I think practically all manufacturers use water based base (color) paints.

Update:
I went to the dealer yesterday, they are unfamiliar with the issue but are willing to do the right thing to make me happy. They said it could be a chemical reaction that appeared later, or from drips from a garage door hydraulics that ate into the clear coat ( which is cant be my case as i know exactly where i park and there are no nearby garage doors. I've attached a photo, it has debris from the road but all the large brown spots are under the clear coat.

Very interesting and also troubling that the spots seem to appear after some length of time. Does make you wonder what is going on. Also makes you wonder when it will stop. If you have bumper for instance resprayed, will the spots appear someplace else at a later time?

Many of the spots seem to be on bumpers. I still wonder if the bumpers are painted in a different facility and with different paint that the rest of the car since the bumpers are a flexible piece. I have been thinking about trading my GTS for a 991S, but going to wait until this paint issue is resolved.

I could live with that if the car was sold to me at base price. It's not like Porsche options cost them anything, since adding options in a lot of cases, actually reduces the manufacturing cost of the car over base. For example, my friend had his stock exhaust stolen when he left his car in a parking lot overnight, and replacing the stock with sport exhaust was way cheaper.

Yes looks very similar to mine, except you have a lot more. I may have discovered another one on my bumper. Eeek!

jyupitt1,

What specifically is your dealer willing to do to make you happy?

I think it would benefit everyone affected by this to know what each dealer/PCNA is offering to address and resolve this issue.

Re-spraying a brand new car due to an unforeseen paint defect will almost certainly affect vehicle value immediately.

MoeMistry,

The dots on my GT Silver rear bumper are at the back. Not rear tire spinoff at the wheel well or sides. In "S" on the Porsche lettering, basically centered and lower area below, and right of license plate.

Do you think a good, carefully applied polish would cut enough to remove them without re-spray?

Some (very few) of mine were able to be polished out. I got the car back Friday night and the bumper looks great. Only one other "dot" or "freckle" remains on the roof which could not be polished out.

As I said on an earlier post, I am no longer working with the PCNA case worker since their only authority is some sort of (what I assume would be) minimal compensation. I now will work with headquarters in Atlanta directly. I have not decided whether or not to get legal involved at this point however I am considering one of the above posts which suggests getting the press involved.
