I have the Porsche factory cross bars with Rocky Mount bike adapters on my Panamera. That system is functionally no different than on the 991. I cruise comfortably at 80 with bikes up, but I do take it (a little) easier on the curves. I carry road bikes. The rack is a fork mount system, the front wheels go in the trunk. I've used this system for over 3 years, between my previous and current Panameras. I also had racks mounted on my previous 997.2 S and is was just as solid as the Panny.

The system I have mounts so securely that it feels like you could lift up the car by the bikes, although I don't think I'd be willing to test out my theory.

Me too. Last month I saw a friend at the track with a 08 Cayman having all 4 tires loaded in the roof. He said he's been doing it for a year with no issues.

We'd only need 3 up there (one in passenger seat). Still, I'm not quite comfortable with it. If you find another solution, please let me know!

They don't fit too well in the front seat let alone the back seat. They tend to rock to and fro when turning and are pain to look past when checking the mirror or window when changing lanes. A front wheel might be somewhat easier. I had to drive with a 19" wheel+tire in the back for 300 miles. The passenger was not comfortable. Then drive with my old 20" in the front for about 10 miles.

Do make sure to double bag it if you don't have a wheel bag.

All from experience.

Here are some photos of the racks in action with the kayaks holders. I have a bike rack and ski/snow board rack as well so more photos coming of those.

I put the kayaks on this morning and drove up to the lake. Draw a bit of attention… seemed every other car on the highway was taking photos of us. Someone even sent me a photo of us that someone else had taken on the highway they had seen posted on FB. That was only an hour after I put them on the car.
If I order this for my 991 is it something I can install myself? or does it require the dealer doing it?

Should be quite easy to install at home. You may want a second to assist. You can wait to decide when it comes in if you order it. It's designed to be removable if that's any indication.

Got my rack today. I was hoping for some instructions but the box was empty.

Any tips for pulling up the gasket? It looked like it was going to tear when I began to pick at it.

Instructions for installing the roof rack are in the 991 owner's manual. You should be able to find everything you need there.

Can you post the part number for your rack?

Hi Nick,

I just purchased a 2015 Carrera 4S with the 'glass roof/sunroof' and to my surprise, when I asked about a roof rack, I was told that the roof that I have does not accommodate the factory rack since it didn't have the insets with the threaded holes for the roof rack hardware to attach to. You indicated that you have a rack that works with the glass roof/sunroof and from what I can see, it doesn't mount into the typical roof insets. If you happen to have the part number close at hand, can you post it? I am in the same boat as you - this is my only car and I would love to carry my mountain bike with me if I can.

By the way, really enjoyed your '6 month' review on youtube. Awesome car! I only wish that I had the Burmeister....

Best Regards,

Edward

Hi Edward,

Not sure why they told you that, yes your car should take the factory rack no problem, I know a few people with the same 4S with glass roof with factory roof? Mine is the standard factory rack.

Thanks

Nick
