New Car and Driver-2014 Corvette beats 991 in head to head
#16
I enjoyed the road test. I like both cars, the Porsche more for its quality and all around performance and because I have had one for 40 years and the 991 is the best and I have all this Porsche swag and have memorized all the meanings of all the P-options, etc etc.
A careful reading of the road test reveals that they liked everything about the Porsche more, but that the lower price made the Vette their winner. That directly contradicted a key premise of the article: "this may finally be a Corvette that doesn't rely on price alone to conquer the 911". Clearly for them it was.

Also worth mentioning motortrend voted the 911 c4s the best drivers car in this months issue. I'd take the articles with a grain of salt. Enjoy the car and stop reading those rags, you already voted with your wallet.

I'm not a big fan of car and driver. I don't like to compare luggage space or have such an emphasis on cost for such sports cars. I like motor trend personally. They had a video review of the 911 vs C7 vs Ferrari F12. 911 won! (Price was no issue in the comparison).

c&d is smoking-- there should be some intelligence in such comparisons - like what motor trend did ...the demographics who get this category of cars don't really make decisions based on luggage space and price etc...these decisions are typically made based on the passion. What a rubbish c&d!

So if 911>F12, and this recent review of C&D had the C7>911, then C7>F12.
I'm sure there will somebody who say (best car under $100k) Cayman>C7, so now Cayman>F12.
Cool.

So we will end up with an Abarth 695 being the best "sports"car in the world

With the Prius coming in a close second (which has no reflection on cost or mpg - like was stated in C&D).
A Yugo would have won, but it did not have an entry for the current model year.

Just look at it... Isn't that a timeless and very desireable design?

I just got my C&D yesterday and skipped right to the scoring summary. Can someone explain to me how they awarded 20 points to the Corvette for "Cost" and in the same category awarded 1 point ...1 single point to the Porsche 911 for cost? Sure the 911 was optioned up the kazoo and doubled the price of the Corvette. So yeah the Corvette should have been awarded the full 20 points in that category...but the 911 should have gotten 9 or 10 points as well. That 8 or 9 point swing would have given the overall victory to the 911.
C&D was hellbent on awarding the victory to the Corvette and manipulated the scoring to target the results it wanted... I am not even a Porsche-guy and I recognize this travesty...what a joke!

(like Koenigsegg, Pagani, Rolls Royce, etc... - if you want to see some personalization...)
*edit: I secretly have a similar issue with the 'Vette - there are over $25k in upgrades (possibly more, but I haven't been looking recently) for a $52k car - very similar percentage to the 991.
But there are a LOT of options (not as many as the 911) to personalize your 'Vette as well. Let's not discount the improvements Chevy has made to their premier sports car. It is a wonderful car, with many features that others value as well (including personalization, improved traction/power application, comfort, convenience, AND (most importantly) performance).

So I finally had the chance to read the comparison in Car and Driver and I laughed.
Vette Total Points: 207
911 Total Points: 202
5 points difference. And like others aid,
and the vette got 20 points for price and the 911: 1
How stupid is that....
If you look closely, why is the weighting 20 to 1 as opposed to the rest of the scores in the category which use 10 as a weight. If it were 10 to 1, the 911 would have won....how dumb is that. Who puts the weighting on that? Why not 50 to 1?
I've lost all respect for C&D. I actually got a $10 renewal notice at the same time...I tossed it out.

I recently drove the C7 (X51) on the Monticello race track. From a pure performance standpoint, is is every bit the equal of the 991S, and perhaps even a bit faster. Definitely felt grippier. The build quality in the interior is slightly less than the 991 to my eyes and touch. The removable roof panel is a notable bonus, while lack of back seats a notable drawback (to me). It has a great soundtrack and has a good dose of "emotion" to the drive.
Personally, I would never buy a C7 because I don't like the styling, and I'm a Porsche fanatic in many ways. And I can afford a 911 and aren't super concerned with value. That said, the reality is that with ECU technology being what it is today, adaptive dampers, DFI, dual clutches etc being prevalent, you don't need to spend 911 money to drive 911 fast. Alfa will soon release a carbon fiber tubbed car for around $55k. Even Jaguar (for god sake!) offers a great sports car today (the F-type).
I think the best "value" 991's today are actually the turbos and GT3's, because they definitely outperform the other cars I mention here and compete head to head with the Ferrari and McLarens at significantly less $$.
