Looking for the right DD exotic
#31
Hmm I have a family member with a new 2014 boxster S. I don't recall it being really bumpy on sport plus. It has PASM. I'll take it out when the snow melts in a couple days and drive it and see. I would drive a GT3 back to back but my dealer will only special order them and none for stock.
Good luck with the search for your perfect DD... It's not an easy task!

Do not plan on hauling stuff around

Speedsterr,
If your dealer isn't letting you test drive an R8 before most of the paperwork/financing has been completed, find another dealer that will. I had the same problem with a couple of cars I was considering over summer.
I had a rep say the exact same thing to me for a V8 R8 and an M6. I found two other dealerships, both downtown, that were kind enough to let me test drive both models. Just look around a bit and have an honest talk with other dealerships. I would not recommend spending a ton of time/energy shopping for a car that you haven't test driven.

I think that will give you a pretty good idea how the GT3's suspension is. For me it is too harsh, but for other people it may be just right. Also have to admit that I find my Boxster more harsh when I'm in the passenger's seat than when I'm driving it myself, so untill I get the oppertunity to drive a GT3 myself, this is my opinion

I don't think it will depreciate THAT much. But yes if it drops enough I would buy it instantly.

Now depending on your build and flexibility, the 911 can be difficult to jump in and out of repeatedly.
The Panamera will bore you in no time whatsoever, as will the Cayenne. A C4S would work best given the weather that you might face and its extensive options list and customization will address your desire to have something exotic and cater to your desired comfort setting.
Given your budget you have a litany of choices at your disposal, so the issue of practicality becomes your deciding factor.
At the time of my purchase the R8 was in contention with my 991, but rumors of a complete facelift put a end to that. However, if you plan to flip the car in short course this may not be a concern to you.
Finally, I would hope that any recommendations given here are from folks who have actually owned or driven the vehicles in question for some extended period of time as "Test drives" really don't cut the mustard.

I was going to buy a 991 turbo S but for the way I drive and roughly $25,000 difference for what I paid for the Plus vs. the Porsche, I'm happy. And yea, no more brake dust!

I got a killer deal on a V10 Plus and have now put over 1000 miles on my car. To me, the suspension is perfect - don't know what the auto journalists were thinking about, but I'd say that it is a perfect balance of handling and comfort for street driving. Yes, it's a bit harsher than the magnetic shock equipped R8 I owned, but the turn in, cornering capabilities and lack of body roll are much more to my liking. The Plus' suspension straddles the R8's magnetic shock normal setting (too soft) and the sport setting (too hard for the street) perfectly. And the sound of that Plus' V10 at 8000 RPM in the sport mode setting, which opens up the exhaust valves and remaps the throttle, is wonderful. When the sport mode is not engaged, you can putter around like its an A4.

The nice thing about the R8 is that it indeed drives like an A4 if you leave everything in comfort, which of course also applies to the 991 Carrera when equipped with PASM. Both cars completely different in terms if concept, but are very compareable in terms of daily driveabillity and performance.
I could definitely live with an R8 on a daily base, but since I decided not to use my sportscar as a DD, I have cut my budget in half hahaha. To me it's not worth spending $300k+ on a car I only use for weekend driving. (I would if I was living in the USA with those bargain-prices though... You lucky people!)

I think I need to get a refund because my 991 with PASM certainly does NOT feel like an A4 if "I leave everything in comfort".
Are you referring to an Audi A4?
the 991 is a very stiff ride.

But to be sure... With PASM I don't refer to the SPASM or PASM Sport suspension! The 991 certainly is more comfortable than a 981.
EDIT: Let me put it in a different way... A 991 C4S and a R8 are as comfortable to drive as the Audi S5 cabriolet I owned (same platform as A4 and same suspension as S-line A4 or A5)

I drove a Cayenne Turbo for 5 years (original model.) Great vehicle for its versatility, and really silly fast in a straight line. Also handled well FOR AN SUV. It is a 5000+ pound behemoth and will not feel at all like a 991 or R8 or F-type, etc. I like the R8, but I haul around golf clubs, which doesn't work in that vehicle. For your criteria, I'd stick with a German 2-door.

That's what I was thinking....
An exotic is not a DD...
Besides that, you first need to find out what kind of car you want. You can never compare a GT3, Panamera 4S and a Cayenne Turbo. Theonly simularity they have is that they're Porsches.
The Panamera is a luxury sedan, that handles like a very heavy sportscar. The cayenne is a luxurious truck that handles like, well... A very sporty, luxurious SUV.
If you want a sportscar, that can make you smile on every twisty road, yet can be used to commute in comfort, get a 991.
However... A GT3 is a different story. It certainly depends on what you expect in a DD, but for me is not a car I like to drive on a daily base.
Saturday I had the chance to experience the new GT3 (unfortunatley) as a passenger, but regardless what all those journalists said, no way that can be called a DD, at least not for me.
It's absolutely a great car and the sound is addicting (the first half hour), but for a DD way too uncomfortable. It's loud inside, the suspension is a lot more harsh than a Carrera and it misses the more luxurious options (like a good sound system) that make a car a DD for me. This may of course be completely different for you.
I highly recommend to arrange a testdrive, before you go and order one.
I think the C2S or C4s is a much better DD and if you want to add some power you can opt for the X51 (although I personally never see the value of it, but that's just me)
The only good alternative for a 911 is IMO an Audi R8. It's a true sportscar, just like the 911, is equally as comfortable (except the V10 plus), but has only 2 seats and looks a bit more agressive, so it's not as much below the radar than a 911. The build quality is on par with the Porsche too...

I've noticed last night when I was brushing my teeth I was thinking, mmmmmm, maybe I should get a turbo in the future and not a GT3 as I can drive that more ...
You planted a seed Suzy !
I'm starting to see the GT3 is more a toy like my Boxster was, and the Turbo is more a car like my C2 is ... damn you Suzy ;-)

The only thing you don't get with the Turbo is the emotion of the GT3. With a nice sports exhaust you can get some of that emotion out of a Turbo though... It just doesn't rev to 9000.
