The whole Carfax process stinks in my opinion. I hate to see 3rd parties sharing information about myself without my consent and without any guarantee about its accuracy or relevance. In half the states, Carfax has access to police reports for instance (This is not unlike insurance companies getting access to your traffic law violations and penalizing you for it). If I want to buy a used car, I ask someone with enough technical knowledge to check it for me and this is more reliable than any Carfax report.

Alan - I'm glad things worked out to your satisfaction and this is one of the most educational threads I've read in a while. Thanks for posting your experience.

In my case, the irony is that the carfax for my repaired car was still "clean" several weeks after the accident and repair. I lost track of the car after I traded it in, but the dealer had it in his inventory with the statement that it had been damaged whereas Carfax showed nothing.

As I mentioned Richard Hixenbough at Collision Claims was very helpful to me. He reviewed my plan to recover the DV for no charge and helped me gain confidence in the outcome being positive. I hope you are successful with your claim!
