Roads built for the 911 - post a pic
#18
Drivers of motor vehicles do not own the roads We cyclists are entitled to ride on the roads too. It's not real hard to just slow down, look for a safe place to pass and them pass cyclists. Suzy, if you never learned how to ride you should give it a try. You should try it. You may like it. By the way, thundering past a bicycle rider with a PSE on is not only rude, but it is extremely dangerous. While many riders are experienced and are used to such abusive conduct, there are many novices out there who could be startled, fall and be severely injured. While driving a Porsche Carrera is a privilege, it does not confer right, title and lordship over public roads. Drive responsibly my friend.
Besides that, people on bikes often take the whole road, cycling with 4 or 5 people next ot eachother (who is irresponsible here?). That why I said that the PSE does a good job there. They notice it and are aware someone is behind them. I see lots of people driving their cars slowly behind cyclists for 5 minutes, without being noticed by the cyslists and than go use their horn several times. That is IMO dangerous, because you scare the hell out of the cyclists.
So please don't acuse me for being irresponsible! I am definitely NOT! I never ever think that I own the road!!

I cycle. We have absolutely no protection from 3000 pounds of steel and stupid. Perhaps I'm just a little sensitive as a cycling buddy is now in a rehab in a semi conscious state after spending 10 days in a neuro unit in a coma. He had a cycling accident. He is an expert cyclist and was wearing a helmet and before his accident he worked as an emergency room physician I was run off the road and broke a bone in my right hand a couple of years ago when a SUV made a right turn into me. SUV drove off but driver was caught and prosecuted. Yup I am a little touchy about this subject. I don't hurt anyone or anything riding my 15 pound titanium cycle and I am, as a matter of clear and express law, am entitled to share the road with even those who (gasp) own a Porsche. While driving my Porsche I respect others' rights no matter what they are driving. Well if cyclists are riding 4 or 5 abreast, yeah I guess you have cause to scare them, rev your six cylinders and blow by them. Yup. You are just too important and your desires and need for speed outweighs any concern for their safety. You sure a PSE is sufficient?

I certainly do respect others' rights on the road. Unfortunately I see a lot of cyclists that don't... Also a lot that do, but when descending from a mountain at full speed on a bike and then taking the "perfect line" is not really driving responsible and respecting other people on the road IMHO. Lots of accidents happen because the ascending car had no idea that there was a descending cyclist on their road half in a blind corner.... No one can blame the car driver in that situation....
Luckily, the roads I mentioned are not that crownded by cyclists and also not extremely narrow.
The Stelvio for example is, in holiday season (june, july, august) not a nice pass to drive a car. It's a very narrow but popular cycling route (because Giro d'Italia) and the road is full of cyclists. It just gets too crowded and that's when people (both cyclists and car drivers) get irritated and accidents happen.

Back on topic now...
That road is indeed a very nice road. I've seen that episode. Unfortunately Top Gear often do these things when roads are closed so there's no traffic. In reality it is often a little bit different, but still epic to drive on these roads, as long as people keep in mind that it isn't a race track where you can go drifting around corners. (I've een it happen....)

Suzy, I may be going out on a limb but if you stop revving your engine and slowly approach a peloton I'm gong to guess that they will flatten out to single file to let you pass. I thinking that the only thing you are doing by revving your car is to **** off the riders
Enough of this topic. Sorry if I've pissed off my fellow Porsche owners but as you may have guessed I'm a little sensitive about tip his topic

I stand corrected as I have never driven a car or a bike in the alps. Suzy, feel free to terrorize or kill any cyclist in your way with your Porsche In Switzerland. Who am I to tell an experienced Swiss alps driver what to do? Note to self, leave bike home when traveling in Switzerland as local customs are not compatible with cycling. You learn something new every day. Revving is [very] annoying for cyclists! Like I said... i do ride bike myself!!! Because of the PSE they hear the car before i'm behind the cyclists, so they go behind eachother already when they hear the car. Cyclists don't hear most cars, because the noise of the wind, which is nothing less than logical.
Feel free to come drive in the Alps. It's a beautiful surrounding for cycling and you don't have to be affraid that I will go drive behind you revving like an idiot! I'm NOT that kind of person...
EDIT: changed the invectice

Suzy, just a polite note re:"Revving is ******* annoying for cyclists!". Please keep the profanity under control! Inserting an * doesn't change the word enough, or its meaning....especially to a 9 year old!.... i.e. my nephew who is close by!
I can understand that the dialogue got heated but its still no excuse for ungentlemanly, or in your case, unladylike responses.
I'm regretting starting this thread!
Lets get back on topic please or mod please shut it down!

I'll burry the hatchet and I hope that I once get the chance to ride in the Alps together with RNL on our bikes. (Although, he probably is a little better trained than I am )
Don't regret starting the thread. There is nothing wrong with this thread. In fact... A thread about beautiful driving roads is great!
Now back on topic.

This is truly pathetic..
In the last 48 hrs we have;
1. Resorted to name calling and discussing cyclists.
2. Spent page upon page discussing an AUDI of all things.
3. Wished death upon another board member because of a 991 related fatality in Miami.
Have you people completely lost the plot? Civility and common courtesy cost nothing.
Please get a grip folks.
Thank you.
