My C4S ain't no SUV, but I made it .. just saying

So I got rid of my '12 Cayman Black Edition and '12 S4 this year - picked up a left over '13 C4S PDK/PSE/SPASM .. and I have a '14 Cayenne Diesel on order (I pick up on Friday) which will b my DD and have winter wheel setup. I arrived yesterday at work at 6:30 am in beantown .. after a work holiday party and 8 inches of snow .. needed to get home. Anyway .. I know the 20" Pirelli PZero are horrible snow tires, but how hard can it be, right? I honestly did not want to spend the night in the city.

I'm 21 miles from home and 6 miles off the Pike .. at 8:30 pm start my journey out of the financial district, 2600 miles on my odometer btw. Managed to make it out of the parking lot onto the Pike .. so far so good. Toll booths were not plowed and front clearance was an issue - only tire paths .. just kept the C4S moving and heard many interesting snow scraping sounds - but I just plowed on. My entire journey on the Pike was relatively uneventful - I kept the speed no more than 35 .. actually averaged 20 from start to finish. There were times when the car slid .. especially when there was no pavement .. the car always gave warnings of sliding .. I never braked and just went along with the flow.

The off ramp - was totally not plowed recently (and I guess about 4 inches of new snow) and proved challenging - again .. just went very slowly and slid around. Now I'm off the Pike .. took a slightly different route to avoid 2 hills and managed to make it to the road my house. My driveway plowed, road was not. Had to do some shoveling of the street (8 inches), quick start and made it to the house driveway. House driveway, despite being plowed was slick and required some shoveling.

OK .. the summary - it was dumb, scary, exhilarating and exciting .. the car and I made it home safe and really no drama. The HOLD on hills was a major plus and I was surprised how little the car actually slid and ABS rarely came on. With the right tires, it would of been a snow war horse (like my former S4 was). With that said -I'm looking forward to the Cayenne!

Haha! GREAT story! What a testament to the capability of AWD on the 911 platform.

Yeah, the Cayenne would have fared better, but it wouldn't amount to the excellent story you were able to share here. It would have been more of a "meh, another day in SUV" type of story.

I have 20" PA4s, we got hit with 6"-10" of snow the last few days, was out in everyday with my C4S, was totally fine.

For those of you putting 20" snow tires on your 991s, what is your preferred tire? Michelin or Pirelli?

Michelin is far superior tire.
