wheel lock removal/replacement

For anyone having to remove wheels with 991 factory locks:
Be aware the entire outer edge revolves around the locking portion to prevent any attachment from holding except for the key that is made for it. No socket will work- you need to use the key. (There are different length bolts, inc the locking ones for cars with factory spacers).

The key is in your front compartment- in the plastic blister on the right side along with other tools. It pops right off with a little tugging.

NEVER let anyone with a power wrench near it to take the wheel off or put it on. Use a hand wrench and be sure the key is seated correctly in the locking bolt. Be gentle to get it set properly and seat it all the way on as far as it goes.

The wheel bolt is torqued to 116 lbs, and if it is not seated the key will be damaged. It may still work if damaged but extreme caution is needed not to do additional damage to the key- or get a damaged part seated in the wheel bolt. NEVER let anyone with a power wrench near it to take the wheel off or put it on.

There is a code number on the end of the key. Replacement keys cost $200, have to be ordered from Porsche. Don't ask how I know.

I had to order a new key as well for $175. I then ordered a new set of one-piece locking keys (I was told the 2 piece lock/ key of the type you're describing were fitted to 2013 991's with the factory 5 mm spacers). The one-piece lock/ keys look a lot more solid and less susceptible to breakage. Also, the key and locking lugs were approx $80 for the entire set, as opposed to $175 for the "high security" lock/ key. Also, as Chuck mentioned, dealers don't keep master keys on hand for the two-piece version, and the only option is to order the key from Germany. FWIW, I called Porsche NA to express my displeasure that the key is so fragile (you'll see lots of reports on the forum about broken keys) and how ridiculous it is that the dealers don't stock master keys, and Porsche NA graciously sent me a $200 voucher toward parts or service at any Porsche dealer.

I can't help but wonder... these days, if you don't live in LA, NYC or Detroit, are locking lug nuts still necessary?

I am actually thinking of getting a key for each lug.
Not for theft but because I heard of pranksters loosening lugs, to get a laugh out of peoples wheels falling of while driving.

There are different designs of wheel locks put on 991s. My early build car with 5 mm spacers has a type that apparently has problems. Apparently Porsche now uses a more robust design.

My problem was that after having new tires put on, the tech that did it broke one projection in the key that fits into the lock when torque wrenching the wheel back on, and could not apply the required 118 ft lbs needed on that bolt.

I don't know if that happenned because the key was not properly seated, or if it happenned when the wheels were being removed, if an air impact wrence was implicated, which wheel it happend on, etc- just that the key was damaged. The part that broke came completely off. I used the broken key to remove the locks, turning gently - and then replacee them with regular (spacer length spec) wheel bolts.

It might be that the damaged key will still work- I don't care to find out. I heard on the forum that it is not an isolated event, so as suggested called PCNA- and they are providing a voucher to cover the cost of the new key I ordered.
