auto dim retrofit?

Hi all,

My GT3 build is confirmed without auto dim and I cannot change it. I don't have the auto dimming feature on my 12 cayenne too. It is truly pain in the @ss. Please help!

We probably can't help because we don't know what auto dim is.

Not sure if the Auto-Dim mirrors is an update option just yet. Best bet would be to contact someone like SunCoast Parts and ask. They do list auto-dim interior mirror for the 996, but nothing (yet) for 991. I also think the exterior side mirrors may be auto-dim if you have the feature from factory, so updating your 991 might be an expensive endeavor if additional wiring and parts are required.

Yes the exterior mirrors also auto dim with this feature. It is pathetic on the part of Porsche that this is not a standard option on these cars. Given how low to the ground the 911 is, there is no doubt that the driver would be blinded by rear lights. (Even your average KIA has auto dimming mirrors and a rear camera).

There are a few users on this board (like Rainier) that have ripped these cars to pieces and might be able to shed some light on the wiring being in place.

It's not the end of the world since you can always manually dim by flipping the flap in the Center rear view mirror. The two side will be a slight inconvenience. For now put your mind on something else as it doesn't really help.

Do you want Auto Dim on the;
Interior Rear View Mirror only?
or
Exterior Review Mirrors also?

Has anyone tried to look up the part that you need?
Isn't it just a swap out (at least for the interior RVM) with possibility of power connections needing to be added to the harness.

It would be lovely to have both the interior and exterior mirrors. I will contact my SA later today to find out.

The outside mirrors might need wiring from the interior mirror, which I think contains the light sensor.
At least that is how Mercedes works.
In the Benz, I taped over the light sensor, on the inside RVM, to disable auto dimming, because it dimmed so dark that the exterior mirrors became useless.

That is odd, I just purchased the GT3/sports mirror from Suncoast about a week or so ago, and they had the option of standard mirrors or dimming mirrors. (Still available here) (I am in Taiwan, placed the order on Friday, and received the part the following Friday.) I am not sure if mirrors will work if your car doesn't have the auto dim function to begin with though...

On the other hand, I remember reading somewhere that one of the California dealers has been beating all of Suncoast's prices (think it was Carlsen Porsche or something, can't remember exactly) so maybe give other dealers a try? In any case, good luck with this, a GT3 will be a sweet ride regardless of whether or not it has auto dimming mirrors.

Thanks for the link. I talked to my stereo shop guy. I could buy the auto dim GT3 mirrors and He could hook up a switch in the cabin so I can make it on or off manually. So during night time I can manually flap the rear view mirror and hit the switch. He said it is possible to retrofit both rear view mirror and side mirrors to stock but it requires a lot of work and cost. Coding, wiring, parts, and tearing apart the dashboard.

You should be able to just purchase the mirrors instead of the whole kit though. Also, you should just ask people at the stereo shop to hook both your interior and exterior mirrors to the switch, so you only have to go through with the action once. Anyways, please keep us posted as to how the retrofit goes.

Isn't that what you already have now? A switch (analog, not electronic) that allows you to switch from night to day?
