E85

Watched a documentary on Netflix with the wife and it explained how all cars after 96 are able to be reprogrammed to run on E85.

Not that I am saying I want to do that but is this possible for our Porsches?

Wouldn't E85 be better for our engines because they burn cleaner?

Am I just out of my mind?

E85 actually has more energy and can generate more HP.

I would assume that you would have to change out the injectors due to the larger volume of fuel being used with E85. I do not think you can just reprogram a vehicle and call it good, I may be mistaken though.

Not true, not even close from an energy standpoint. Gasoline has 114,000 BTUs/gallon and ethanol has only 76,100 BTU's/gallon. E-85 contains 81,800 BTUs/gallon. Gas mileage is much lower also, if you care about that.

E85, i guess it's ok...but is it actually cleaner? This fuel is grown using petrochemical fertilizer and is a net energy loss..that is, costs more to make than it is worth.

Injectors, fuel pumps, sometimes depending on your goals you will need to add fuel lines and of course some tuning along with it. We have done many conversions, I have yet to see a client want to go back to regular gas. Engines love it, especially turbo motors.

I know the special you are referring to. They specifically said that most cars produced by General Motors after 96 can be reprogrammed. The E85 blend is higher octane and has a better cooling effect on the intake air charge which is fantastic on cars that are turbocharged or have stratospheric static compression ratios but an ordinary car modified to run on E85 won't magically turn into a Ferrari. If the engine is designed to work with the higher octane fuel then there is an advantage. Also, since alcohol contains less potential energy than gasoline, much of the fuel system has to be upgraded for higher flow.

this discussion is missing a couple major downsides of E85.......

1. E85 mileage is 15-30 % lower than regular gasoline with 10% ethanol blended in. Do your math and the both the cost per mile and emissions per mile are WORSE than gasoline.

2. E85 produces large amounts of tailpipe acetaldehyde (CH3-CHO) which is a Class I carcinogen listed by even our SDIQ EPA

3. E85 with the large government subsidies by donkeys and elephants in DC to the farm states (to buy votes) have created a shortage of food worldwide. Good for farmers, food brokers and Agricorporations; bad for third world countries and Baltimore.

E85 was the 1990's answer to reducing our dependence on Mideast oil and helping reduce the US import/export trade deficit. As with all government mandates on the free market, it has backfired miserably. Our reliance on Mideast oil has gone away with increased exploration/production, more fuel efficient cars and return of the bicycle (just kidding!). Now if we all started driving Porsche Cayennes, Range Rover Sports, or Dodge Hellcats types again our reliance on foreign oil could be shifted back to the 1970's-2000's............won't that be a kick in the butt!! Buy our oil from ISIS and lockout Canadian oil by blocking the Keystone pipeline . Makes sense to our KFC leader and the millenniums I guess.
