PSE - Not That Loud! Not Impressed
#16
My wife thinks I play the TV too loud and I think is sounds just fine. So question isn't whether other people think PSE is loud or not. If you want to know whether your PSE was installed properly, go to a dealer, put your car next to another 991 with PSE, and ask two sales guys to blip the throttle to say 6K RMPs simultaneously, while you stand between the two cars (blindfolded so you don't know which car is yours). If you can't tell the difference, your PSE was properly installed. If it was properly installed, and you still don't consider it loud, then get some aftermarket pipes. Just my two cents worth.

I think msgm1's point is that since the side mufflers are the same whether you have a non-PSE system or you have the PSE, replacing the PSE's center muffler with a x-pipe can be done without ever upgrading the PSE to begin with.

Second, I also +1 others' comments that something may be wrong with your setup. PSE on/off is very noticeable, both inside and outside the vehicle. I highlighted the differences in my PSE vs. Cargraphic video a while ago, which you may want to check out.
Third, keep in mind that, even if PSE is off and you go above ~3,200RPM with moderate throttle input, the valves open up anyway. Hence, you may not be noticing the valves opening in "quiet mode."
Fourth, have someone drive your car around a street while you stand outside and listen. If you're still not happy with the volume of PSE, then consider getting a valved x-pipe like AWE, Cargraphic, etc. These will replace the center PSE muffler, but they have integrated valves that work with PSE, so nothing needs to change in terms of lines/wiring.
Keep in mind that most aftermarket x-pipes will make the car much, much louder. AWE's SwitchPath is super loud. I always said that my Cargraphic X-pipe basically "turned up PSE's volume to 11." With AWE, though, I feel like the volume is turned up to 20. It really is loud. That may or may not be the way you want to go.

Christophosphorus - thanks for the detailed video and the "Volume" analogy, first time I have seen an comparison like that. In all online videos the AWE seemed to get my interest above the others, I think I better her one in person first. Anyone got AWE in the Denver area??
