991 C2S - What's That Noise!?
#17
Update
I dropped my car off at the dealer at 5:50am. At 4:30pm I was told it was next in line to be serviced... After some terse words on my part I was given a new Cayenne to take home and told they would call as soon as they knew something. Going only by my description, the service manager is guessing there's a problem with the suspension top mount which apparently has an exposed bearing that can get all mucked-up with road grime and make noise. We shall see. Stay tuned.
Update 8/17 11:17am
Porsche called and said they ordered a new strut. That's all the info I could squeeze out of them... I'll find out more when I pick it up.

Ok. I finally have the car back after two weeks. They were able to hear the noise and diagnosed it as a failure in the left rear strut. There was some shipping issue that delayed the strut arriving for several days, but once all the parts came in the repair went pretty quickly. After test driving, they heard a squeak and found the sway bar bushings were worn, so those were replaced as well. Here's a list of everything they replaced:
- Support Bearings
- Spring Rest
- Insert, Shock
- Vibration Damper
- Spring Strut
- Coil Spring
- Shock Absorber
- Sway Bar Bushings
- Stabilizer Suspension
They said it was just a random part failure. No need to feel that any of the other wheels might fail as well. It wasn't dangerous to drive on it this way. Just noisy.
After driving a Cayenne for 2 weeks, it felt great getting behind the 911 again. Nothing like it. Thanks for all the input from everyone.

That sounds like the backlash in the differential. A little bit of that is normal, but in your case it sounds excessive. As you have a transaxle car, the diff and the transmission are all in one unit. Time for a trip to the dealer.

I find if odd that a dealer would have a delay in getting such common part for a late model. But go figure.
